A JUST COMPLAINT.

To the Editor. Sir, — Please allow me space 'm your valuable paper, to call the attention of the Borough and the general public m particular to what I deem a great injustice "to the tradesmen and ratepayeris r *bf the ' town. I refer to these travelling book hawkera ? curiosity a hiwkere, and others of a like kind. These book hawers ,. avoid the hawkers' license by coming and ( pbtaining orders first, but.'- Btill they should, if possible, be made to take out a license. The residents are te blame for purchasing of such men books which charge LI or 30s for, I myself have obtained locally for a third less, besides the advantage I have had of keeping the money m the hands of local men arid ratepayers. I think it is scandalous that men can come here and takei their LSO or LIOO out of the town when local men could sell the same article for far less money. Of coarse those who carry their wares with them can be compelled to take out a license. 1 I am, youra &c., i « tf r - : - OnBWHOWAS __*. Dec 8, 1883. [We quite agree wiih our 1 correspondent. We saw a case the other day ' m which a Family Bible was so"id by a local tradesman for L2l2s, superior to ohe for which arfo.her person had paid a hawker ojjer „.=• L_. The cost of collecting and, travelling 1 oa the hawking system is so great' that the money must be got back somehow, and of course those who purchase have to par heavily toineet the expenses.— -Ed. M. D. Times.]
