To the Editor. Sib,— ls there any law a"gainstpnb<» licans supplying liquor to men when drunk, because there has been a shameful lot of drunken men about lately, and it is becoming a disgrace to the town. This town is generally speaking as sober as any other place about, but drunkenness is on. the increase very rapidly j a a.hd!;llb»|sUSve it nearly all comes from one hotel; which is generally surrounded by a . half "drunken set of bushmen and Maoris, whose language is so abom> inable that no decent woman can pass the place. This has become a crying disgrace to the town, and is also the same to the constable, who has badly neglected his duty as re* gards the house I mean. I am, &e>,. A Goon' Templar. December 3, 1883; . - Section 146 of "The Licensing Act, 1881," says .—"lf any innkeepef permits, drunkenness, or »ny viojent^ quarrelsome;. (or riotous conduct to take place on his premises, or sells any liquor to any perron already m a state of intoxicatioa, or by any. means encourages and incites any person tb drink, he shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding, for the first offence £20, and not exceeding for the second and any BUbsequsht|offence £50."
