The Manawatu Railway.
The railway bridge across trie Porirua harbour (a correspondent writes) is a very busy and attractive sight at the present time. The temporary wooden bridge of scaffold* ing which has been erected, extehdß about one«third, of the distance across the harbour, with a lofty gantry built on it, which runs on rollers as the bridge extends. : There is also a powerful crab-winch placed on ; the tdpi of the' gantry, -whißre "two men can lift or lower at ease from twenty to thirty tons at a time. On Thursday last the first set of iron cylinders was lowered into its place on the bottom, m about fourteen feet of water, ready to place the air lock on the top, and the engine is about.ready to commence the operation of fording the air out of the cylinder for the men to work m under water. Every precaution appears to have been taken against accidents while this important work is being carried out. A boat is always close at hand and twolif e-buoys are hung on the gantry ready, m case) of any accident which might occur. Everything np to tbe pre* sent time has been carried out without the slightest accident or hitch m any way,, which reflects great credit on those wb.3 have charge of tbe work.— Post.
