Taranaki has always been noted for hot political feeling, and the people there have an excellent plan of speaking out their minds. At a meeting held there the other day to consider the raising of an extra £6000 loan to complete the waterworks scheme," it was pointed out the rates m that town were now 4s 2d, and another speaker, Mr W. K. Hulke, uttered the following remarks, which apply to other places besides New Plymouth : — "Considering the depressed state of the times, when carpenters offered to work for 6s per day, and there was a large number of men out of employment, they ought to be very careful of the expenditure. Some people who expected to derive immediate benefit from the expenditure of public money were always eager to have the public works kept going, no matter where the money came from or how it was to be paid, but they were only a few, and the majority had to put their hands into their pockets and pay heavy rates on account of the unwarrantable expenditure." Mr Hulke's remarks exactly hit the nail on the head. The object should be, not to spend money m order to promote fictitious and temporary prosperity, but to spend it so as to permanently benefit the district.
