From the provisional meteorological returns for December we learn that, with the exception of Wellington, the'rain fall has been m excess, and at ail places the temperature was considerably lower than the average for the same month m the previous 18 years. The land m Manawatu County which Messrs Hankins and Baker have legally taken for road purposes has been gazetted. We notice that itr T. H Caverhill, the local manager of the Bank of New Zealand, accompanied by Mrs Caverhill, returned to Palmerston last evening, from his holiday m the South Island. During Mr Caverhill's absence his somewhat onerous duties m these dull times have been discharged by Mr Woodward, who, during his short stay, has won the esteem of all who bave been brought m contact with him. The regular monthly meeting of Lodge Manawatu Kilwinning, No, 690, S.C., is convened for this evening. At the Palmerston Court yesterday, the charge 0f perjury preferred against Mrs Coleman by George Boyd was adjourned td the 17th instant, when it will be dealt with by the Resident Magistrate, Mr Ward. Bail of £5 (defendant's own recognisance) was allowed. A sitting cf the B.M. Court is being held at Foxton to-day before the locai Justices, Mr Ward not being able to attend. Messrs Hawkins and Perkins proceeded to Foxton last evening to take part iv the festive gathering to-day. Mr J. R. F. Pratt, one of the newly appointed Justices of the Peace m this district, sat on the Bench yesterday for the first time. Messrs Sherwill andß. Loudon are m Wellington arranging with the Com* missioners of Insurance for a loan to the Borough of Feilding, Mr Montgomery, M.H.R. for Akaroa, one of the leaders Of the Opposition, was a passenger by last night's train from Foxton to Wanganui. Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill announce their usual monthly Horse Sale at Morphy's horse repository,Feild ing, for Saturday nest. We understand that a number jf valuable adimals will be auctioned. The firm's usual monthly cattle sale takes place on the previous day. Mrs Morley announces that she is offering special clearing lines for a tew weeks m millinery, infants' clothing,&c, at her establishment next the Ready Money Store, PalmerstonA housemaid, three general servants an experienced cook and a mothers' help are advertised for. Applications to be made at Mrs Morley's Registry office, the Square. Messrs Bentley Bros' altered advertisements will appear to-morrow, and will contain some information of interest to the public. We regret to record a somewhat sudden death which occurred here yesterday. A little child, 5 years of age, a son of M* EUis James, who bad been delicate for some time past, was taken ill on Sunday morning, and on Monday afternoon Dr Harvey was called m. The doctor prescribed, but on Monday about midnight the mother, who was nursing the little one, called Mr James, who was just m time to see the little fellow breathe his last. We have not i heard the cause of death. ! We are informed by the Chairman of j the Orona Council that the petition for I suspension now only requires about sixty signatures to enable the movement to be carried into effect, These sixty will, however prove harder to get than all the others.
