TOADYISM.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — In Wednesday's issue of your contemporary " special mention" was given to Mr Snelson, the reason stated being that he had written a letter to the Grown Lands Department urging that, as population was leaving the district* on account of scarcity of employment and general depression, some works on Crown Lands should be pushed on. The article somewhat innocently goes on to stats that the Minister was absent from Wellington when the heavy pressure was brought to bear upon the department, and then jumps to the conclusion that the tenders now called for Pohangina work were a consequence of this influential representation. Such unmitigated bosh i is about as logical as the inference of the old man m the story that the Goodwin Sands were caused by the erection of Tenterden Steeple. In the first place the Pohangina is entirely out of Mr Snelson's district, and m the second n-overnnient were not likely to put much faith m the statement about the unemployed when at the same time telegrams were being sent from Woodville all over the Colony reporting thafc labor was so scarce that 200 could find employment on public works at once and those very telegrams were published m the Palmeiston papers, j The article is an instance of desoic~ able toadyism, though this may be as a sweet savor m the nostrils of some who are highly susceptible to flattery. It is quite m consonance with the views of men who ascribe the success of everything to the endeavors of their own sweet selves, and who I verily believe, hold the opinion that Palmerston would at this moment be covered with dense bush had they never drawn the breadth of life, and condescended to give their valuable services, I %m, <fee, Nuff Sed. [We have excised certain portions of the above letter, which refer to matters outside the subject. —Ed. M. D. Times.]
