BOROUGH ENGINEERING.

TO THE EDITGB, Sib, — At the last Council meeting the Borough Engineer stated that the work m Fitzherbert street and College "street west had been carried out to suit my views m regard to draining my land. This statement is false. On the work m College street I have never expressed any view of any kind either to the engineer or to any of the workmen, and I challenge him to disprove this statement. If the work and I have any connection, I should be inclined to look upon the work as a bribe whereby I was to be bought to hold my tongue m connection with Engineering masters of the Borough, With regard to Fitzherbert street : j The work done there does not suit my views. It is a well-known fact that my land is not drained thereby, | nor anybody else's land m that vicinity. My views are that the work done m that street is a standing libel on the most primitive attempt at engineering, and should you after this favor me with space m your paper I will state why and wherefore. May I ask what value are the ratepayers supposed to get for the £10 10s a year salary now voted to the Engineer ? Would he not gladly do on per centage any work that may crop up, and if he would not we have m Palmerston, m Mr Larcomb, a good sound-sense,practical man, who would ; and many others would jump at the chance. What next? Echo answers— "A ten gninea retaining fee to the nightman," Apologising for trespassing, I am, &c, L. G. West, Borough Councillor.
