Convent Schools of City Hold “ Break-up
ENTHUSIASTIC PRIZE-GIVING EUNCTION
One of the most enjoyable aud enthusiastic breaking-up ceremonies held in Palmerston North for many year's was witnessed yesterday afternoon when the ltoeal Convent Schools held a function in tho assembly hall of the primary department. There was a capacity attendance, the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Mansford, taking part in tho function, in addition to tho Very Rev. Monsignor MacManus, Mr. M. Hyland, and others interested in tho welfare of the schools. At the outset Father MacManus expressed sincere thanks to the Mayor and Mrs. Mausford for their attendance. All were grateful for this, lie said, especially when it was realised that it was an anxious time for everybody. On behalf of tho children and teachers he wished to thank them for being present to join in the congratulations due to all at the closing of tho school year. A Splendid Year's Work
The annual report showed that the record for the past year was an excellent one, stated the Very Rev. Monsignor MacManus. “In all departments the achievements have been worthy cf honourable mention, but particularly so iu tho musical section. A fellowship in pianoforte came to a Palmerston North Convent pupil, this high diploma being accorded to Miss Zcta Loamy. Miss Marjorie Bryce gained her teacher's’ L.A.8., a.nd Miss Beryl Millard was successful in obtaining Part I. of tho teachers’ L.A.B. Miss Marjorie Garrett aud Miss Gladys Stratton obtained tho Diploma of L.A.B. (concert performers). Both obtained very high marks. The latter also passed her L.T.C.L. with SO marks.
“In / the musical examinations (pianoforte, singing, violin, harmony, and art of teaching) there were 99 successes. Among these wore one fellowship, 2 teachers’ L.A.B. (one complete and one partial), 4 Licentiate diplomas, 3 Licentiate practical passes, 1 Associate diploma, 5 Associate practical passes, and 7 higher locals. Nineteen candidates obtained honours. “The schools (roll number 487), which admit pupils from the kindergarten to the univorsity, arc closing on the 14th with a concert in the Opera House. In the public examinations the following successes were gained:— Matriculation and medical preliminary, 1; Public Services entrance, 3; intermediate, 2; senior free place, 6; proficiency, 42; competency, 2. “On the field of sport, the school maintained its standard. In the primary schools’ competition, the senior boys carried off both tho soccer championship shield and the soccer knockout cup. Of the fifteen games played, they won fourteen, the last being a draw. They also won a friendly match played against Danncvirkc Convent. In the annual Rugby match with Levin Convent, the local team won, thus securing for another year the Merritt Cup. In Rugby one, and in soccer five boys were chosen from the Convent, teams as representatives for Mana-j watu. Tho senior girls (B team) weroj runners-up for tho Primary Schools’ Basketball cup, and the junior team! gained the Primary Schools’ Baseball i cup. j “Sincere thanks arc extended to the following for the keen' interest they look during tho year in tho school sport: Mr. Merritt (Rugby coach);, Mr. Savage (soccer coach); Missj Wisclinewsky (basketball conch), and ■ for tho untiring care of the school gardens and maintaining them in excellent order, Mr. D. Kennedy. A great measure of gratitude is also due to the members of tho school committee who have worked so energetically and enthusiastically during the year in the cause of the children and of tne teachers.”
The Prize List At this stage the Mayor presented the certificates gained in 1931 and June, .1932, for the Trinity College of Music (London) examinations, together with cards for the 1932 practical examinations, for which certificates have not yet come to hand. Sports Awards Made Following upon an address by the Mayor (reported in another column), Mr. M. Hyland presented the sports prizes won during the year, stating that they were jealous for the school and proud of the teachers. The list of awards follow: Association Football Shield (Mr. 'Young’s cup), for Primary Schools’ knock-out competition; Association Footbali Cup for Primary Schools’ championship; Merrifc Cup (presented by Mr. and Mrs. Merritt); Herbert Smith Cup, won by girls in junior baseball competition; Kia Toa trophy of miniature gold football for most improved player, won by Pat Howard; O’Brien Cup, for most points suored in midget competition (Rugby), won by Pat Hickey; medal (presented by Mr. C. (presented by Mr. A. M. Ongley for highest batting average), won by William Millar. Mr. Hyland added that a particular voto of thanks was due to Messrs. W. Merritt and Savage, the respective Rugby arid soccer coaches at the school. The children joined heartily in giving three cheers for the Mayor and Mayoress. Enjoyable Musical Treat Prior to the formal part of the ceremony and the distribution of prizes a most enjoyable musical programme was presented, the cream of talent being heard in well-selected items. A pianoforte solo, “Invitation to the AA’altz, was rendered by Mi’ss Zita Leamy, F.T.C.L., L.A.8.; a song, “The Nightingale,” by Miss Freda Doherty; elocution, “The Old Piano,” from “The Ncwcomes” by Thackeray, Miss Babette Rodgers; vocal duct, "May Day Morn,” Misses Myra AVilson and Freda Doherty; song, “My Prayer,” Miss Mabel Gray; instrumental trio, “Andante,’’ Ist violin.
