Central School Gala Day
SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. A gala day to raise funds for the work of the committee, was held at Central school yesterday. It was a laudable effort in which all joined from parents to the youngest of the pupils. The part of the parents was to buy and this they did with a willingness that resulted in the various stalls being well patronised. Tho pupils provided the entertainment. This took the form of drill by both boys and girls, the smart display reflecting credit on the teachers responsible for their training. Then there were items by both the senior and junior choirs which were equally appreciated. It was the exhibition of school work in the large assemb-ly-hall, however, that attracted greatest attention. Hero was set out a wonderful array of work which gave a remarkably line insight into what is b&* iug taught the children at school today. Painting, drawing and writing one expected to see and good writing, painting and drawing it was. But in addition there was almost every conceivable form of handcraft that a boy or girl could undertake —woodwork, paper work, raffia work, cooking, dressmaking and sewing, fancy needlework and a host of others all making an array that could not fail to draw favourable comment from parents. It showed that Central is by no means behind in catering for the educational needs of the children attending the school and it showed also, the striking change in methods of teaching and subjects taught, that has oome about in the last decade or two.
Those in charge of stalls were:—Produce, Mcsdamcs C. Cater and A. Jones; cakes and sweets, Mcsdamcs E. D. Evans, Denham and J.
