Women’s Institutes

WHAKARONGO The monthly meeting of the Whakarongo Women’s Instituto was held in the hall on Friday, December Mrs. Prince presiding. Thero was not such a good attendance as usual only about 30 members being present. Apologies for absence were received from xMesdames Morris, Frith, McLcavcy, Rodgers and Mountford. A roll call “The uses of a lemon,’’ caused much amusement. An interesting article taken from tho Women’s Institute Handbook was read by Mrs. Prince. The prize winners for the best thrcc-egg sponge were Miss M. Vauticr 1, Miss B. Speedy 2, Mrs. Downing 3. The sponges were judged by popular vote. They were given to AH Saints’ and Willard Homes. Two amusing competitions, telegrams and drawing a house, were won by Mrs. Sharman 1, Miss Mills 1, Miss Woodd 2 and Mrs. Shannon and Miss J. McCool 3. It was unfortunate that there was no demonstration out this was unavoidable. The afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mcsdames Finlay, Crawford, Jones and Nowdick. Miss Newdick contributed a song towards the afternoon’s programme. Miss M. Vautier superintended the sales stall. Final arrangements were made for the children’s Christmas tree which will be held this week.

WOODVILLE Tho last monthly meeting for the year of the Woodvillc Women’s Institute was held in the Parish hall on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. W. 11. Nixon presiding. Mrs. ltofe, delegate to the recent council meeting, gave an excellent account of all that transpired on that occasion and was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Tho usual Christmas party for members’ children is to be held on Saturday, December 17, all anangemonts being well in hand. Contiibutions towards the filling of a hamper for the women and children at the Poiirua Hospital were called for, gifts most desired being wool for knittiuguor crochet, especially of bright and pi etty colours, material for needlework, toys, fruit, biscuits or other articles or Christmas cheer. A display of woik done by members during the year was held, au outstanding feature of this being beautiful rugs from both new and waste material. A competition was held for the best article on which there had been a demonstration given during the year, Miss J. Beattie winning tho contest with a pair of well made gloves. The decision was by popular vote. A hat-making competition was responsible for some merriment, tho milliners wearing their own creations. Mesdames Duke and Roulton judged this event and awarded the prize to Mrs. M. Bcaglcy. A roll call, ‘' II a nay Hints/ brought forth a varied assortment oi useful and practical ideas. A pleasant little interlude was provided by Mastci R. Boyd, who sang a Maori song very nicely, with pianoforte accompaniment by his sister, Miss Jcssio Boyd. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the host esses, Mesdames J. Horne, ' Whitting ton, and helpers, and the meeting was closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

SANSON There was an exceptionally large attendance at the meeting of the Sanson Women’s Institute on Tuesday night presided over by Mrs. Drew, hour new members were enrolled. An invitation was received from the Sanson School Committee to attend the annual school picnic at Ballancc bridge on December 17. The Sunshine committee reported having visited many homes during flic past month. The volunteers for the ensuing months work wero Mrs. 11. Williamson, Mrs. F. Tostevin, Miss M. Murphy and Miss R. Dwyer. It was decided to give a Christmas party to children under 10 years of age, the party to be held in the local hall on Wednesday, December 21. A Christmas gift box will be sent as usual to the District Nurse, Feilding, for distribution. A very interesting demonstration of barbola work was given by Mrs. W. J. Read, of Rongotea. A hearty voto of thanks was accorded Mrs. Read. A competition for a frock costing not more than 5s wt.s won by Mrs. J. Fagan with Miss M. Murphy second. Christmas greetings were extended to the institute from Mrs. Anderson, senr., also a message of appreciation for tho visits paid to her by members of the Sunshine committee. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the hostesses, Mrs. C. Lawrence, Mrs. J. Currie and Misses A. Bracken, H. Bowater, V. Matthews and A. Matthews.
