BRAVE SEAMAN MENDS A LEAK. THREE HOURS’ PERILOUS WORK United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Dee. 6. Five hundred passengers on the Conte di Savoia breathlessly watched a seaman named Amatruda dangling from the end of a seventy-foot rope above t'no turbulent Atlantic, risking his life to plug a ten-inch leak between wind and water.
The liner broke down SOO miles from New York, owing to a defect in a discharge pipe causing trouble with a tur-bo-generator, resulting in a leak. Amatruda responded to a call for volunteers. He was frequently submerged, and worked for three hours under floodlights. The vessel proceeded at reduced speed, the stabilisers working well.
The passengers rewarded Amatruda, whom the Government will probably’.recognise. .
