From Our Own Correspondent. Mrs. W. N. Brown, Plimmcr toirace, is making splendid progress since her operation and expects to be able to return.,borne this week-end.

The many friends of Mrs. ’C. Cronquest, Stout street, will regret to hear that she is an inmate of the Levin Hospital. A delightful children’s party organised- by the social committee of the Anglican Church was held in the Parish hall on Saturday. At 5 p.m. the children sat down at daintily set out tables laden with good things to eat and after full justico had been done to uu fare provided the hall was cleared anu. games played until 8 p.m. A large Christmas tree, heavily laden with toys and decorated with many tiny coloured eleetrie lights, was displayed and Pather Christmas (Mr. J. Hallam) duly arrived to distribute the presents. On each child’s name being called he or she canio forward to receive a parcel. Also Father Christmas remembered tho ladies who worked so hard to give the children pleasure and they each received a parcel. The free buses provided by Foxton for the use of {Shannon people desiring to visit Foxton on {Saturday nights are being well patronised, somo 40 persons making the journey last Saturday. Repairs have been carried out this week to the Fire Brigade station and the platform of the bell tower.An unexpected visit was paid to tho Shannon school this week by Mr. Lawton, agriculture inspector for the Wellington Education Board, for the purpose of judging the children’s gardens for the award of the R. A. Nicol garden shield for the best school gardens in the Horowhcnua district. The local school gardens were tho last to be yisited and it was found that the Shannon school was successful in winning the shield, the points being as follow: Layout and spacing 10, freedom from weeds 9, number of varieties under cultivation 9, thinning and transplanting 10, lower standard plots 6, flower garden 5, forestry plots 10, children’s note books 8; total 67.

Mr. Lawton stated that the amount of ground under cultivation was larger than at any other school in the Wellington district and the gardens were a credit to the children and their teachers, especially as neither they nor the teachers knew that they were to be inspected for the shield. Tennis.

Postponed on account of the weather on the last two Saturdays, the association match Shannon v. Levin was played under ideal conditions on Wednesday afternoon on tho local courts. Levin won with 119 games, 11 sets to {Shannon’s 84 games, 5 sets. At the conclusion of play Mr. Worsfold thanked the members of the {Shannon Club for their hospitality and stated that they had had a most enjoyable afternoon ’s play. Mr. Graham replied on behalf of the {Shannon team. The details of the various games are as follow:

Men’s doubles: Graham and Pope beat Black and Worsfold 9 —7; Robinson and King beat Astley anu Donnelly 12 —10. Ladies’ doubles: Mrs. Long and Mrs. Mark lost to Misses Kerr and Palmer 3—7; Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Pope lost to Mrs. Bennett and Miss Percy i —7; Mixed doubles: Graham and Mrs. Long lost to Black and Miss Kerr 2 —9; Pope anu Mrs. Mark lost to Worsfold and - Miss Palmer 4—9; Robinson and Mrs. Robinson lost to Astley and Mrs. Bennett 5—9; King and Mrs. Pope lost to Donnelly and Miss Percy 4 —9. Croquet.

The draw is out for the Butt Cup and Boach Brooch and games for both have been played this week. For tae Butt Cup, first life, Mrs. Morgan (74) beat Mrs. Snelling (6*), 26 —1. For the Boach Brooch Mrs. Snelling beat Mrs. Blaikie 26 —6. For the Brighton Ferns on Monday the holders, Mcsdames Picard and Bovis were successful in retaining them, defeating Mcsdames Morgan and Moynihan 26—17. On Wednesday afternoon the usual 20-minutc competitions were held
