Tokomaru

In the early hours of last Saturday morning a houso occupied by Mr. L. Peach and family aud owned by tho Ashlca estate was burnt to the ground. Mr. Peach was awakened by flames coining round the bedroom door and just enough time was left to effect a very hurried exit. Tho cause of tho fire is unknown, and practically everything was lost, Mrs. Peach just managing to gather a few clothes which were handy. Both house and furniture were insured, the policies being held by the owner and tho occupier respectively.
Tho school committeo held its monthly meeting on Monday, Mr. T. M, Ryder presiding. In his report the head teacher stated that the roll number was 91, consisting of 53 boys and 33 girls, thus maintaining the attendance of last year. It' was decided that the annual picnic bo held locally and that the school be closed for the occasion. Tho spot chosen for the picnic has been kindly loaned by Mr. W. R. Kelly and is situated on the river bank above tho Tokomaru river bridge. An exceptionally good artesian bore has recently been completed on Mr. J. R. Moody’s property, a flow of 25 gallons per minuto bciug secured at a depth of 500 feet. A cricket match is to be played on the recreation ground during tho weekend between a local team and one from tho P.D.C., Palmerston North. Miss M. Webb, who has been staying
with Mrs. A. McDonald, Awapuni, fins returned home.
Airs. S. Lloyd and her two children are visitors to Palmerston North. Airs. A. Grady will return to her home during tho week-end.
