From Our Own Correspondent Tennis Season Opens.

The official opening of the Woodville Tennis Club was held on Saturday afternoon under almost perfect weather conditions. There were a large number of members present as well as visitors and the five courts were kept very busy during the whole of the afternoon. A Yankee tournament was played but owing to the large number of entries each pair could only manage to play five games, at the conclusion of which it was found that a number of couples had four wins and one loss. Prior to the commencement of the games, the president, Mr. J. C. Bolton, welcomed all present and hoped that they would have a pleasant afternoon’s sport. He said he was pleased to see so many in attendance and it looked well for the club for tlie coming season. Results of the games are as follow:—Mrs. Little and G. W. Silane 4 wins, 1 loss; Miss K. Kirkpatrick and W. Norman 4 wins, 1 ,loss; Mrs. King and E. Pickering 4 wins, 1 loss; Miss D. Tennent and B. Ebbett 4 wins, .1 loss; Miss W. Sutton and R. Schischka 4 wins, 1 loss; Miss R. Grinlinton and Bartle 4 wins, 1 loss; Mrs. Foreman and F. Graham 4 wins 1 loss; Mrs. Nicholson and R. Jones 4 wins, 1 loss; Aliss M. Mules and K. Mitchell 3 wins, 2 losses; Mrs. J. T. Horne and F. Baker 3 wins, 2 losses; Miss C. Skinner and W. Goodwin 3 wins, 2 losses; Miss J. Goodwin and Miss B. Gothard 3 wins, 2 losses; Miss Stace and J. Richards 3 wins, 2 losses; Mrs. G. Plummer and Miss J. Peebles 3 wins, 2 losses; Miss Whittington and Reg Johnston 3 wins, 2 losses; Miss P. Lynch and G. Plummer 2 wins, 3 losses; Miss Sutherland and K. Retter 2 wins, 3 losses; Miss Graham and Miss Toogood 2 wins, 3 losses; Miss W. Smith and C. Anderson 1 win, 4 losses; Mrs. S. Wright and O. Lagor 1 win, 4 losses; Miss A. King and G. Fairley 1 win, 4. losses; Miss Redwood and Miss Hustwick 1 win, 4 losses; Miss Spackman and J. Spackman 5 losses; Miss H. Skinner and H. Lagor 5 losses; Miss Wilton and J. Horne 5 losses.

In the evening the club finished up a most successful day witli a flannel dance which proved to be most popular, there being a large attendance. During the evening the president, Mr. J. C. Bolton, took the opportunity of congratulating the winners of the championship and handicap events played last season. He then asked Mrs. Bolton to present the various trophies as follow: Men’s singles championship, Mr. W. Goodwin; ladies’ singles championship, Airs. J. T. Horne; boys’ championship, B. Ebbett; girls’ championship, Miss I. Graham; ladies’ handicap singles, Miss T. McGregor; ladies’ handicap doubles, Mrs. S. Wright and Mrs. J. T. Horne; combined handicap doubles, Miss J. ■ Peebles and F. Mackie. Music for the dance was generously supplied by Messrs H. Brooker and N. Bartle, extra dances being played by Miss L. Peebles and Miss T. McGregor.

Golf. During Ihe week-end the local Golf Club had its official closing day, when a mixed Canadian foursome was played over 12 holes. The afternoon was not very pleasant, there being a cold westerly wind blowing but despite the unfavourable conditions the cards handed in showed some excellent scores and were were for the greater part very close. Afternoon tea supplied by the ladies was partaken of in the club house, after which Mr. H. Lagor, the club captain, presented the trophies won by the ladies during the season. He said the season had been a most successful one and the members’ interest well maintained right through, and he hoped that next year the club would again show an increased membership and enjoy another good year. The best cards handed in in the Canadian foursome were: Miss L. Peebles and J. J. Young 62—15—47; Miss C. Skinner and F. Mackie 63—15 —48; Miss J. Goodwin and W. Norman 61—13—48; Miss E. Peebles and H. Lagor 61 —12—49; Miss M. Redwood and W. J. Goodwin 63—14—49; Miss A. Noble and N. E. Robertson 70— 10—51; Miss Stace and E. Wilson 71—19 —52.

The opening of the fishing season saw the local anglers out on the river at the break of day and several good bags were reported with the general conditicfa of the fish excellent.' In a competition conducted by tlie Woodville Anglers’ Club the following bags were weighed in:—l. Cullen, 20 fish weighing 301bs. 150z5.; F. Blatchford, 19 fish weighing 241bs. sozs.; E. Pritchard, 20 fish weighing 201bs. 7ozs.; P. G. Wigzell, 12 fish weighing 171bs. 6 ozs.; and C. Hayes, 9 fish weighing 81bs. 14ozs. The trophy for the heaviest fish was won by I. Cullen with one weighing 21bs. 151ozs.
