Tokomaru

From Our Own Correspondent, An innovation was introduced at. Tokomaru on Friday night last, when a community sing and concert which laid been organised by the Anglican Church members and conducted by Mr. G. Smith, of Foxton, was held. When the concert commenced there was not. a very big attendance but by the time the sing had progressed a little, there was a very good gvowd present. A very pleasant diversion was the singing of "It's a Great Thing to .Sing” by Master Leo King, of Foxton, and also the song in character "I Don't Work for a Living.” Prior to the commencement of the sing several Items were presented, the performers being Mr. Wollerman, of Palmerston North, and Aiiss J. Stevenson, of Foxton, who presented two elocutionary items. Later during Die evening Mrs. Cronquest, of .Shannon, presented two songs at the piano, and Mr. Cronquest gave two humorous sketches. Air. Wollerntan and his daughter Juan also presented two duets. Quite a humorous diversion was created ut the finale of the sing, when, after lie had introduced the song "One man went to mow a meadow” to listeners, owing to the rapidity of the song. Mr. Smith removed his coat and waistcoat, and to the delight of the audience, displayed an article of apparel not usually worn by the .male sex. When Air, Smith returned after making a hurried exit from the stage, the Lev. Air. Kenny thanked all those who had assisted with the sing and especially Air. Smith who had carried things along in his usual breezy manner. Musical honours were accorded all those who had helped. Air. Smith’s pianist, who afforded very great, assistance, was Mr. Leo Mattav, of Foxton. After the hall had been cleared, dancing was enjoyed by those present, ami supper was also served. Among those who played for dances were Airs. Wollerman, Aiiss r>. Webb and Messrs L. Alattar and J. Knyvett. Air. C. Voss made a very capable AI.C. A Atonic Carlo dunce was won by Miss D. Webb and Air. J. .Matthews. Among those present were Alesdames J. H. Liggins, J. Schaw, J. Anderson, H. Liggins, J. McNeill, G. .Smith (Foxton), L. .Jamieson, Waugh, Gardiner, Williams, J. K. Whyte, J. Schwass, Wollerman (Palmerston North), N. Gunning, H. Kars. F. Gyde, W. H. Webb, Cronquest (Shannon). H. Parr, A. Rowlands, Alisse.s J. Stevenson (Foxton), A. Anderson, A. Schwass, J. Kelly, At. Ellery, R. Ellery, J. Wollerman (Palmerston North), J. Stokes, .T. Rankin, V. Guy, G. Guy. M. Pope, V. Voss, M. Gardiner, D. Gyde, N. Sutherland (Palmerston North), At. Johnson (Palmerston North), Mercer _ (Palmerston North). Cook. (2) (Opiki), AT. Webb and others.

Mrs. Newbury, of Wellington, was a visitor to her mother, Airs. V\. Parr, during the week-end. The following are the results of the shoot in the cup final. J. Hansen wins the A grade cup with the fine total of 1100, this being an average of 68:; points per shoot. J. McNeill is runner-up with 1009. C. Williams wins the P. grade cup. The following are the individual scores nut up for the cup shoot: —J. McNeill 70, GS—l3B; J. Hansen 68, G9 —137; T. S. Schaw 67, 68—135: .T. Claridge 67, 67 13P J. Liggins 66, 68—134; B. Guy GG, 07 —133; C. Williams GS. 61—132; B. Walden 64 65—129; D. Standisli 62, 06 —123; A. Aloody 67, 6(1—133; F. Gyde 61, G 1—125; R. Scanlon 67, 61—121. A ladies’ shoot was held the following week when there was a good number present. Alan Williams and Mavis Schwass were the winners of the novelty shoot, and for the ladies’ individual shoot, there were five who tied for first place. In the shoot oft’ Mr. J. McNeill proved the -winner. The Rifle Club members wish to thank all those ladies who came along to help make the shoot a success.
