Powerless Against Gun
Ineffectiveness of Modem
Armour
SHELLS THAT PENETRATE 16 INCHES OP STEEL
United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Oct. 3, 7.15 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 3.
The constant war between gun and armour is won at present by tho gun, according to tho Daily Telegraph’s uaval correspondent. New 16 and 15-inch shells passed clean through armour 16 inches in thickness, not merely when striking at right angles, but with the plate inclined at 15 and even 30 degrees. Moreover, tho bursting charge and fuse remain intact and would, therefore, explode with devastating violence in the interior of tho ship.
As the correspondent observes, few battleships have 16-inch armour over their vital parts.
