N.Z. NATIONAL RED CROSS SOCIETY

Manawatn Branch Members Receive Certificates At a pleasant social gathering held at Messrs Collinson and Cunningbame’s last evening, under the auspices of the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, certificates and medallions gained during tho year were presented to members. Mr A. J. Graham, first president and a member of the executive, presided in tho absence of thp Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), and extended a welcome to tho large number present, particularly mentioning tho members of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, who were in attendance, namely, Sister J. Lewis, Red Cross nurse in charge of the Wellington Centre; Mrs Andrews, actingsecretary for New Zealand headquarters, also for N.Z. Red Cross Order of St. John; and Major J. Abel, V.D., chairman of the Dominion executive. There was a very pleasing incident when Melba Niven presented dainty bouquets to Sister 'Lewis, Mrs Andrews and Airs J. K. Patou. Mrs Mansford arrived later and was presented with a bouquet. Appreciation of the valuable services rendered the society by Miss M. Buchanan in assisting the secretary, and by Airs R. L. C. Aitehison as class secretary, was expressed by Airs Graham, who called on Alelba Niven to present these two ladies with floral tributes. Air Graham also asked their acceptance of small tokens as a tangible expression of the members’ gratitude. The recipients briefly expressed their thanks amidst the applause of the meeting. Referring to Red Cross work in tlie Alanawatu, Air Graham said it was gratifying to note the progress made by the Alanawatu division since its inception a few years ago. It was a silent vet effective force and had done a considerable amount of work for relief. The main activities of the branch had been directed to tho educational side and in that connection considerable success had been achieved as indicated by the growing classes and increasing number of certificates year by year. Air Graham traced the history of the movement and the incidents leading up to the formation of the British Red Cross Society in 1879, and said to-day, though nations were not as one on economic points, they were of one mind since the Red Cross flag had flown over fields of battle as an emblem of mercy and symbol of comfort and relief. Air Graham paid tribute to those who had given their time and ability in forwarding tho work in Palmerston North, particularly mentioning members of the medical and nursing profession. There were 'also supervisors and others concerned to whom the members were under a deep debt of gratitude. Major Abel said they had achieved a. record for New Zealand with regard to medallions. Twenty-two candidates sat for this examination, all of whom had passed. Another pleasing feature was to find the leaders participating in. the wo’k and gaining their medallions. Witn such an achievement the future of the Red Cross was rosy indeed. Men s detachments were a, new feature of the work in. New Zealand, and desirable. The speaker paid tribute to the work of Miss J. N. McGhie in building up a strong centre in Palmerston. North. A development of the movement would be the formation of a Manawatu c.en- 1 tre, with headquarters in Palmerston North, its committee composed of presidents of various sub-centres. The committee would handle, the work of the whole district and have direct representation on. the Dominion Council. Major Abel went on to say that the Red Cross Society was now established in 59 countries, with a membership of 5,000,000. In addition there were Junior Red Cross branches in 48 countries with over 14 million members. In India in one province alone 53,000 new members had been added and in New South Males 6600. Without doubt it was the largest organisation in the world. Major Abel dealt with the activities of the Junior Red Cross, and mentioned that in New South Males its members bad. raised £IB,OOO. Major Abel sketched the duties of the voluntary aid detachment service, another necessary development. He assured the company that from tho 'headquarters’ point of view Palmerston North was

one of the bright spots in the movement.

Offering her congratulations to the nursing section, Sister Lewis said the branch was under a debt of gratitude to sister McGhie for her services. Practical work was tho test and in this connection Palmerston North nienrbeis had more opportunity to become proficient than almost any other centre, due to the facilities provided by the Palmerston North Hospital and Miss McGhie. Sister Lewis had a living model to show the uniform adopted by Red Gross nurses. She referred to various aspects ot the work and said the knowledge of that work must make a great difference in the general hcaltn of the community. She outlined the work of the detachment and its possibilities in time of disaster and in conclusion. expressed the hope that Palmerston North teams would compete for the cup donated by Dr. Collins for practical work in the nursing division. Mr Graham moved votes of thanks to Major Abel and Sister Lewis, also to Sister McGhie and Sister Bright. Tho services of Mr J. K. Paton (the general secretary) were eulogised, and thanks were conveyed to the performers and to the social committee, Mesdames R. L. C. Aitehison, Carruthers, Galbraith, Turnbull, and Miss Buchanan, also to the chairman, by Major Abel.

During a break in proceeding* daintysupper was served. Musical and elocutionary items added to the enjoyment, of the evening, those contributing being as follow: — blisses Bowden and Paton and Master Paton (instrumental trio); Miss Naomi Whalley (vocal solos), Mrs R. S. Law (violin solos), Miss Melba Niven (recitations). The accompaniments were played by Mrs J. li. Paton and Miss Dorothy Stevens. The bouquets presented were the artistic woi’k of Mrs F. N. Andrews and Miss Joan Bradfield.

A very successful evening terminated with the National Anthem,
