Lytton Street School

MEETING' OF COMMITTEE The Lytton Street (Feilding) School Committee met last evening, when Mr J. Penny presided. Also present were Messrs J. S. Tingey, N. C. Harding, C. V. Jewell, L. Millar, J. B. Stuart, W. C. Wilson (headmaster) and Mrs Green. Correspondence was received from the Wanganui Education Board regarding altered by-laws providing for devotional exercises in schools.—The committee approved the idea, while the headmaster suggested that there was a difficulty in that the school had no assembly hall in which all the children could gather together for this service.

Mr Tingey agreed, suggesting the difficulty could be overcome by dividing the classes up into, say, two rooms. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the chairman, headmaster and Mr Stuart, who are to drawtip a programme for devotional exercises for consideration at the next meeting of the committee. It was intimated that Miss Chalmers had been granted sick leave, and the vacancy had been filled by Miss Smith, relieving assistant. The headmaster’s report stated that the average attendance for the last month had been 252.6, about 00 per cent, of the roll. This low figure was due to the beginning of an epidemic of influenza, which this month had caused the roll to drop by over 100. The school roll now totalled 313, which was an increase of eight over last month’s figures. Sixty new books had been added to the school library, while a number of framed pictures had been purchased with funds provided by the Parents’ Association, with the result that, the rooms had beeu brightened very considerably. Inspectors A. I l ’. McMurtrie and A. R. Herrington had visited the school during the month. Concluding his report, the headmaster said that an unfortunate accident had occurred when the boys were playing, Montie Christian sustaining a fractured leg. lie was taken to Palmerston North Hospital, and is now making very satisfactory progress. The inspectors’, report describes the school as being “very good,” and Mr Tingey said that to have received this description, which was next to the possible, was a matter for congratulation. The majority of the schools in. the Wanganui Education Board’s area did not get such a description. He said the occasion was one on which the committee could extend its congratulations to Mr Wilson and his staff on the high standard achieved. The Lytton Street School was well above the average, and it was very nice to know that activities were progressing so satisfactorily.

The chairman expressed delight with the report, stating that tho school stood almost at the top of tho tree in the opinion of the board’s inspectors. It was most satisfactory to know that tho children were receiving the best education, and he asked Mr Wilson to accept for himself and convey to the staff the committee’s very sincere congratulations. A circular regarding the proposed formation of a Palmerston North and district School Committees’ Association was briefly considered, and the invitation to join was refused. Mrs Green, on behalf of the visiting committee, said that the school had been inspected and everything found satisfactory.

It was decided to give the children a holiday on November 3 for tho purpose of attending tho Manawatu Show. The committee decided to recognise the good work done on tho school grounds by Ah- T. Glenn. The visiting committee appointed for tho present month were Messrs Penny and Stuart.
