From Our Own Correspondent. Weather conditions on Saturday afternoon were very good for the third handicap shoot for flic Apiti Club cup. Fired at 500 and 600 yards, the scores are ns follow: —A. It. McKenzie 48, 45, o—o 40 —04 (limit); W, McKenzie 45, 43, (9)—94 (limit): Norman Viles 80, 42, (S) —80; J. K. Elliott 45, 41. (2)—SS; Don McKenzie ii, 40, (})—Bs; T. W. Pratt 42, 35, (6)— S3;H. G. Mapson 35, 27, (11) —S 3.
On .Saturday next the fourth handicap shoot is to bo fired. Miss .T. Malcolm paid a short visit to Apiti before leaving for Wellington to tako up an appointment at the Karitane Hospital. Mrs. P. O. Hamilton, of Wanganui, Is at present visiting her daughter, Mrs, N. K. Gould, Apiti. The friends of Airs. .T. Cantwell, who recently left Apiti to reside in .Feilding, will regret to hear that she is seriously ill.
The meeting of subscribers to the Apiti library, which was called for Saturday night, was attended by only three people. As a. result of this lack of interest, nothing could bo arranged to revive the local library, barge numbers of books have been borrowed and have yet to be returned, to enable those responsible to make satisfactory arrangements for storage. It is understood that the finances are very low, only a, few shillings being in hand. Mr. George Watkins has returned home after spending a holiday in Havera. War Memorial, A public meeting convened by the Apiti Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Monday night. Mr. A. E. Frujean explained that the meeting had been called for the purpose of discussing ways and means for the erection of a war memorial. Mr. W. McKay was then elected to tho chair and Mr. W. McKenzie elected .secretary. Some years ago money was collected for a war memorial but as nothing further was done the contributions were refunded to the donors. However, a, sunt of £S ISs 6d remained in hand, being proceeds of a sports meeting. A. letter was received from Mr. J. Kearney, junr., secretary of the Cheerio Club, to the effect that tho club would hand over the sum of £ll 10s 3d to the war memorial fund, providing that a memorial be erected within 12 months. The meeting decided to proceed with arrangements for the erection of a memorial, whicii is to be in the form of an arch in front of the hall. The following were elected as a committee to go Into details in this matter:—Messrs W. McKay (chairman), W. McKenzie (secretary, Hugh Osborne, W. Osborne, K. Stone, A. E. Prujean, R. A. Cheyne, J. Kearney, W. M. Duncan, W. McKenzie, junr., O'. R. Stewart, C. Searle. A canvass is to be made throughout the district and the collectors are: Messrs Osborne and Stone to collect in the area above Norsewood; Messrs Cheyne and C. Searle at Utuwai; Mr. W. McKay from Norsewood road to township; Mr. \V. M. Duncan, township: Mr. J. R. Stewart, Makoura road; Mr. 0. Kearney, junr., Ridge road; Mr. W. McKenzie, Main road. The committee will meet in three weeks time and it is hoped to have tire i etui ns in hand for that meeting. Women’s Institute. A delightful spring afternoon added much to the enjoyment of the October meeting of the Apiti Women’s Institute. Visitors from Wanganui and Kimbolton were’welcomed. The president, .Mrs. C. M. Stanley, was elected to represent Apiti at the half-yearly council meeting to he 1 held la,ter this month at Paliia.tua. It was decided to enter for the Crawford
Shield potato growing competition. Mrs. H. H. Jensen is donating the seed potatoes and members may obtain same from Mrs. Jacobs. The secretary read an interesting report of the recent group meeting at Kimbolton. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. F. Munro who prepared the report. Arrangements were finalised for the “hard up” evening on. Friday. Tho question of a local dental clinic was discussed, and members of the committee are to make inquiries into the matter before any further action is taken. The roll call, “How and where J. met my husband,” proved most amusing, one member stating that she first made the acquaintance of her husband over years ago. Mrs. Shapleski, of Kimbolton, gave a most interesting and instructive demonstration of the making of rugs and quilts from fleece wool. Mrs. Shapleslu had several samples of her work on exhibition and a quilt of rose pink satin was greatly admired. In tlie competition for novelty pin cushion the points were awarded to Sirs. A. Prince 1 .and o, Mis. J. Mapson 3. Several entries in this competition were very dainty but did not come under the heading of novelty pin cushion. Tho winning entry, a most realistic silver grey and black owl, was made from a pine cone. Miss D. Prince was the steward and the judges were visitors. Afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Mesdames W. T, Pratt, J. Pettigrew, Misses M. and J. Pettigrew. The surprise packet stall was in charge of Mrs. F. Munro. A short community' sing concluded the afternoon programme. School Committee. Mr |l Wild bore was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the school committee on Tuesday evening. Messrs R. V Stewart, A. W. Benseman, W. G. Morris and W. Hogan (secretary-) were also present. It was decided to top-dress the tennis court with tar and sand instead o£ with Laycold as in previous years. A new lawn mower is also to be purchased. A school cricket club Is to bo formed and Mr. G. H. Gubbins is to select the necessary equipment. The head teacher (Mr. Gubbins) reported the roll nu ™]?® r J*® ,7 with an average attendance of b 9 pupils. The rainfall for September measured by' the gauge at the school was -.9 In. Debating Club. Tlie Literary and Debating Club met at. the Parsonage on Tuesday evening, Mr A F. Stewart presiding. The evening was devoted to prepared speeches. The prize was awarded to Mr. W.G. Morris who took as his subject The Romance of Fruit Growing. Mr. W. Mai tin gave “An Imaginative Talk on Hon. G Forbes’ Experiences at the Voild Conference.” Mr. Howard Viles spoke on “New' nealand and the Maoris 400 Years Ago.” Supplementary speeches were given by Mr. W. McKay, “The Value of Top-dressing and Pastoral Management, and Mr A. O. Jones '“The League of Nations.” Supper concluded the meeting.
