Ashhurst

From Our Own Correspondent. The first meeting of the committee of the Ashhurst Defence Rifle Club was held on Monday evening, Air. AV. G. Roinley presiding. The lion, treasurer, Mr. J. A. McDonell, reported that the number of financial members stood at 30, but he anticipated the 30 mark during the next few days. Correspondence from the Linton Club was submitted by the secretary, Air. R. Jones, who reported on his interview with the officials of that club. It was decided to forward an invitation to the Pohangina Defence Rifle Club to attend the opening shoot, which is to bo held on Labour Day, tlie 23rd instant. Shooting is to commence at 9.30 a.in. Messrs W. G. Roinley, R. A. Jones and IC. Romley were appointed to decide the conditions of the opening shoot. In the course of a general discussion members eulogised the work already carried out on the range and it was apparent that the future of- the club is regarded most optimistically. The monthly meeting of the Ashhurst School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, Air. J. H. Sumner presiding. There were also present Messrs Af. P. Wilkin, F, A. Dunstall and H, Bristow. Apologies were received from Rev. H. B. Goertz a,nd Air. O. Kerrigan. The headmaster, Air. 11. Fenwick, reported that the roll stood at 124, the average attendance being 115. An adjustment in the classes has been rendered necessary by the. reduction in the teaching staff. It was decided to complete the fencing of the garden plot and also to erect a manuka shelter fence. So as to permit school children to attend the spring show at Palmerston North, it was resolved that the school be closed on Friday, November o. After considering correspondence received from the Palmerston North and District School Committees’ Association, Alessrs J. H. Sumner and F. A. Dunstall were appointed delegates to represent the views of the, local committee.
