From Our Own Correspondent. The monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Alonday evening. All members were present, namely:— Alessrs A. A. O'Donnell (cliairman), O. Jackson (secretary), A. F. McKenzie, G. AV. Duthie and R. C. Powell. Mr. R. H. Abraham (headmaster) was also in attendance, liis report showing tlie roll number as SO and the average attendance 85. The slight drop in tiie roll since last report was due to children leaving the district. The inspectors had visited the school during tlie month and Air. Lancaster paid a visit on Friday last in connection with the Calf Club and addressed Ihc children on the subject of calf rearing. Certain necessary work had been carried out by the Education Board. Friday, November 3, was set; aside for the spring show. Arrangements i for a euchre and dance, to he held In the near future, were left in tlie hands of the chairman, secretary and Air. Duthie. The chairman made reference to the, activities of the Calf Club group committee. Mr. Jackson was appointed visiting committeeman for flic month. On Alonday evening a party of Maori entertainers gave a very enjoyable concert. The hall was well filled with patrons who were enthusiastic witli their applause of tlie various items. Tito programme was well varied and included hakas, poi dances and vocal and instrumental numbers.
Tlie Tennis Club held its annual meeting on Wednesday evening. Air. O. Jackson (the club’s president) presided over a fair attendance. The report showed that the club bad experienced a fair season. Tlie balance sheet showed receipts DIG 17s 10c! and a credit balance of £7 5s 4d. Tlie following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Air. J. Linklater, M.P.; president, Air. O. Jackson; secretary, Airs. O. Jackson; vice-presidents, Alessrs W. A. Waters, A. T. Alitcheli, J. Scheldt, AV. B. Duthie, R. H. Abraham and A. A. O’Donnell; club captain, Air. 11. Robson; vice-captain, Atiss E. Robson; committee, Alessrs B. AVilliamson, C. Pentecost, J. Baker, AV. Sutherland and Miss AV. Robson; delegates to Alanawatu Lawn Tennis Association, Alessrs O. Jackson and G. Duthie; auditor, Airs. A. M. Carson; manager for B team, Air. G. Duthie. It was decided to open the courts on Saturday, October 14 The opening is earlier than usual owing to the fact that building operations are to be carried out by the Domain Board. The play on opening day will be a Yankee tournament, arrangements for which were left in the hands of the committee. It was decided to ask tlie Domain Board for wire netting to repair the fences of the courts, and a working bee is being arranged for Saturday. As usual a grant was made to the school for tennis trophies. The Domain Board is having building and other improvement carried out, and work is expected to commence next Aveek. AVork has commenced on the re-form-ing of the main drive of the cemetery. The Ladies’ Hockey Club is holding Its “end of the season” dance next week, and the Aliniaturo Rifle Club will close its season with a dance toAvards the end of the month. A community sing in aid of the proposed KAVimming baths is being arranged. Final arrangements will be made by the committee at its meeting on Alonday evening.
