Summer Sport in Feilding
BOWLS, TENNIS AND CRICKET Provided the weather conditions are favourable, the summer sport will commence iu Feilding this afternoon with the official opening of the Oroua Bowling Club and' f?t. Paul's Tennis Club. In anticipation of an cariy season these clubs have been to the fore with their preparations, and encouraged by yesterday's warm' sunshine, players are looking forward to to-day's initial play. For the Oroua Bowling Club’s opening a large attendance is expected, seven outside clubs having intimated that they will be represented by at least one rink. The green is in splendid condition and should make for entertaining games. Tho Feilding Club will be represented by the following:— Duncan, Hoc ken, Neilson, Tingey (s.). Tennis enthusiasts will bo represented in large numbers at St. Paul’s hard courts, which have been top-dressed and. arc ready for the season's play. This being the first tennis club to get going, members, as well as players of other clubs* will be keen to fry themselves out. The opening will take place at 2.30 p.ui. St. Brigid’s Tennis Club will open tomorrow afternoon and the Methodist Club will follow on Wednesday afternoon next.
Unfortunately adverse weather conditions earlier in the week spoilt the chances of tho Feilding Lawn Tennis Club opening its season this afternoon, as was intended. The seven courts are iu good order but yet too soft to justify use and the committee wisely decided to defer the opening until the weather is more settled.
Cricketing interests are looking forward to the opening of the season, the date of which will largely depend upon the weather. Team nominations arc due next week, and the fact that the Colyton Club has decided to enter a team will be welcomed. At the annual meeting of tho association some doubt was expressed as to whether the country eleven would take part in this season’s competition. Public Service, Feilding and Old Boys will bo available, making with Colyton four senior grade teams. Sanson is anxious to play senior grade this season, but their elevation would result in a bye, unless another senior team can bo produced. Flock House interests have shown an interest in Feilding cricket, and it is possible that they may nominate a team. It can be said that there _is as much enthusiasm as ever for cricket, and the prospects arc very bright. As to tho grounds, these are in good order. The wiekots, according to Mr T. Donaldson, arc in great fettle, while the outfield, which received attention during the off season, is responding nicely. The mowers were in action during the week, and all tho preparatory work is well advanced.
