Queen Carnival Notes
A reminder is given bowlers and croquet players of the tournament at Takaro Club to-day, commencing at 2 p.m. Tho proceeds of this function are in aid of the Sports Queen, Miss Molly Nathan, and a large attendance of playci’3 is oxpccted. There will also be competitions for non-players. Gymkhana at Showgrounds The committee of the Sports Queen has organised a really exciting afternoon’s fun at the Showgrounds on Saturday next, October 14. There will be a procession from Coleman place at 1.30, and the Pipe Bands and Brass Bands will lead with appropriate music. At the Showgrounds there will bo a trotting exhibition, mock hunt, with hounds, goat race, pony trotting exhibition for boys, draught horse Derby, ugly dog parade, donkey Derby, decorated bicycles, prams, motors, and clowns. There will be prizes for most of the events and full particulars will appear in a later issue. To-day’s Big Event There will be some fun in town today when the committee of the Public Services Queen, Miss Kathleen. Richards, will be on the warpath. Among the novelty items will he a road-roller and aeroplane race, and there will be many other amusing and entertaining features. Bicycle Sports, October 18 The Sports Queen’s committee is making a great effort to capture tho public’s loose money for its queen candidate, Miss Molly Nathan. Another important event forecasted is a bicycle raco meeting on Wednesday, October IS. Sunday Night Concert Attention is drawn to the concert to be held in the Opera House on Sunday night. The committee responsible has arranged an excellent programme and a large attendance is anticipated. Festival Day To-day—Public Services Queen As announced in the advertising columns of this issue, to-day will see tho first big effort on behalf of the Public Services Queen, Miss Kathleen Richards. The organising committee has finalised all arrangements for what will undoubtedly be the biggest effort on behalf of charity ever made in Palmerston North. Collectors will be busy during tlio morning and afternoon, and a particularly attractive stall will be located on tho corner of Broadway and the Square. A travelling troupe of entertainers will render popular items at various points and a mock court will bo in attendance to deal with any and and all delinquents. The two major attractions, tho roller Tace and the cycle handicaps, are being freely talked about, and special arrangements are in hand for tho control of the anticipated crowds. The roller race will be held in Church street, the starting point being at the corner of Victoria avenue and Church street and the finishing tape opposito the Police Station. The highlight in this event, will be the inclusion of an aeroplane in the race. The ’plane, piloted by Captain H. C. Walker, will be handicapped to the extent that it will havo to make a, bold bid to overcome its lumbering opponnents. The “free for all’’ bicycle handicap, to be run. in two sections (junior and senior), is expected to draw a considerable amount of talent, and handsome trophies will be available for the winners of each section. A. thoroughly enjoyable day will surely be had by all those coming into town to see tho fun, and country residents arc especially urged to ‘‘be there.” ADD Queen Carnival Notes—Public Services Queen ETAOIN ETA Special Concert To-morrow
At the Palmerston North. Opera House to-morrow night a special concert will be given by the pupils of Mr A. Garde Grimshaw, assisted by Mr Louis Findlay, tho Public Services Trio and the Palmerston North Garrison Band. A well-balanced and entertaining programme will bo presented by some of Palmerston’s best known amateurs. A silver coin collection will be taken, tho proceeds of which will go towards tie Public Services Queen’s fund in the current campaign for the Mavor’s Relief Funds,
