From Our Own CorrespondentOpening of Bowling Season. The Foxton Bowling' Club’s green was officially opened on Saturday afternoon by tho president (Mr. W. Trueman), The Mayor (Mr. ‘M. E. Perreau) was also present at the ceremony and extended to visitors a hearty welcome to I r oxton. Mrs, Trueman cast the first jaCic and rolled tho first ball, when the green was declared open for tho season, amid applause. Mr. Trueman then declared the adjoining croquet courts open, for play, extending to those present best wishes for a successful season. Mrs. Woods, president of the Croquet Club, took the first shot and wa3 accorded a round of applause. Visiting rinks from seven neighbouring clubs were in attendance and local players made three additional rinks. The clubs concerned, with their respective skips and scores, were as follow: —Northern Club (Stuart) 20 v. Follding (Barton) 17; Levin (Walker) 19 v. Takaro (Monks) 18; Palmerston North (Crouches 20 v. Foxton (Woods) 1:-,; Foxton (John Ross) 21 v. Manawatu (Corbridge) 18; Foxton (Trueman) 20 v. Terraco End (H. Johnston) 15. The results of the croquet competitions were as follow: —Target: Mrs. Blalkie (Shannon); French: Miss N. Woods; golf: Mrs. Perreau. Golf. The following team will represent the Herrington Golf Club in a match with Palmerston North to bo played at Foxto non Saturday next:—E. T. Wilson, L. C. Bryant, L. Thompson, T. Crotty, S. Matter, W. M. Thomas, L. Matter, D. R. Ogllvy, .T. Newton. This will he the last inter-club match for this season. Volunteer Fire Brrgacre Annual Ball. There was an animated scene at the Town Hall, Foxton, on Tuesday night when the Foxton Volunteer Fire Brigade hold their annual ball, which event is always considered "the ball of the season.” Free char-a-banc services were run from ReiKllng - , Palmerston North, Otaki and Levin in connection with the function and these were well patronised, with the result that the large hall was ■comfortably filled with dancers who spent a thoroughly jolly evening. The beautiful decorations comprised a web of red, gold and blue ' streamers and baboons which canopied the. ballroom and were arranged to fall in the form of a dome from a huge square of interlacing su'eaniers which were intertwined with dozens of tiny coloured lights, adding to the wonderful beauty of the arrangement. Over all, and. just beneath the roof, was a huge illuminated bell. At the end ot the hall, facing the door, a decorated dias had been arranged for the professional orchestra which supplied entrancing music. Adding to the gaiety of the scene in which the fun waxed fast and furious, were fancy hats, confetti and throw-outs. In the supper room the colour scheme of red, gold and blue was continued. The artistically arranged tables, at which waited an energetic band of heloers, were laden with an array ot tempting delicacies, making a scene to delieht the ey6, Mr. A- Walls cairicc. out'the duties of M.C., and during supt?er, extras wer© supplied from the talkie eaufpment of th 6 hall. ’The dress circle of the hall was well patronised by a large number of onlookers who appeared to be enjoying the fun as much as those participating below. The happy function continued into the early hours, of the morning, and was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. Among the many present were Mesdantes M.
