MAKING. There was a good attendance at the October meeting of the Makino W. 1., -which was held on Tuesday after being postponed for a week on account of the prevalence of influenza in the district. Mrs J. Mason presided and five new members were welcomed. The thought for the month was “A friend is one who knows all about you and loves you just the same.” It was decided to form a link with an English Institute and Mrs S. Mayhew agreed to act as correspondent. Mrs J. Mason was appointed delegato for the hal yearly council meeting at Pahiatua and a committee was set up to go into the ( -matter of getting rooms in- Feildmg < for the proposed W. I. Club. A ballot, was taken on afternoon versus evening for future meetings the result being a unanimous win for the former and meetings are to commence at 1.30 p.m. Potatoes were distributed for the Crawford Shield competition. The demonstrator for the afternoon was Mrs Kvtney and cveryono was charmed with her wonderful display of rugs; her simple method of making such useful and beautiful furnishings from waste material was a revelation to all. Her carpet runner of especially pleasing colour and design was the object of much admiration. Mrs Kitney was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her demonstration. Tho hostesses for the afternoon, Mrs W. Baker and Miss Baker with Mrs Bell and Mrs Baker, jun were also accorded thanks for the dainty tea served. The competition for the two-egg sponge was won by Mrs Vincent with Mrs Sandbrook second. Tho competition for November will be tho most useful article made from a yard of cretonne, and the demonstration will be on trays and baskets. KIMBERLEY The Kimberley W.I. held a very pleasant afternoon in October, when five new members were admitted. Mrs E. Evans (president) was in the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Pa-ton, Neilscn, Spencer and R. Stratton. The pretty and dainty handicraft of picture-making with silver, gilt and coloured chocolate wrappers was demonstrated by Miss Mellor, and was greatly appreciated by tho members. The points competition for the best six jam tarts was judged by Miss Oody. The results were: Mrs B. Evans 1, Mrs J. Griffiths 2, Mrs R. Gibbons 3; junior section, Miss P. Davies 1, Miss B. Mellor 2, Miss L. Hunter 3. An invitation was received from Levin W.I. for members and their escorts to attend a social in St. Mary s Hall on October 5. Many members spent an enjoyable evening on that occasion. The report of the delegates (Mrs Death and Mrs Bryant) on the conference with a representative of the Horowhenua A. and P. Association ou September 26 was read, in which connection it is understood that there is to be a combined effort by institutes in tho county to put on a special "thrift” display at the A. and P. Show in February. The arrangements have been left in the hands of the special committee appointed by the various institutes. Afternoon tea hostesses were Mrs Speedy, Miss Goyne, Mrs B.
