Utuwai
From Our Own Correspondent. On Wednesday last the October meeting of the Utuwai Women’s Institute was held, Mrs. E. Wingate presiding. Owing to the exceedingly fine weather, a. large attendance resulted and the hall appeared most inviting decorated with spring flowers. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship and the reading of the Creed, after which the president welcomed all visitors and extended a. special welcome to one new member. Mrs. Clapham gave a most interesting lecture on wool, and how to treat wool when washing it, and also a demonstration of carding, and the making of wool quilts. In appreciation of Mrs. Clapham’s efforts, she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and Mrs. Wingate presented her with a neat bouquet of spring flowers. Mrs. Clapham suitably responded. The results of the competitions for the day were as follow: Collection of spring flowers, Mrs. McEwan 1, Mrs. Enright 2; decorated vase of bulbs, Mrs. Henunings 1, Mrs. McEwan 2. The majority of members have decided to enter for the Crawford potato shield competition. The next meeting will be held on November 1, after which a meeting of the executive will be held. The roll call for the day will be "Suggestions for improving W.I. meetings.” Competitions will be for the best sponge sandwich, with and without butter. The demonstration for the day is yet to be determined. Arrangements for the monster Christmas tree are now well in hand and judging by the interest displayed in the preparation, this function should be a marked success.
