Shop Assistants’ Award
PROPOSALS BEFORE CONCILIATION COUNCIL Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The employers’ proposals for the new shop assistants’ award were the subject of Conciliation Council proceedings to-day. The Wellington Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants objected to tbc claims of applicants and .submitted the existing award as coun-ter-proposals. Messrs Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., James Smith, Ltd., C. Smith’s, Ltd., and the 8.1. C., Wellington, were the applicants.
The proposals were generally for a reduction in wages, but more particularly the wages of juniors.
For the employers it was suggested 'that the starting age should be raised to 18, the tendency being for juniors to enter the trade at a. later age than formerly. The proceedings were adjourned without duality having been reached.
