Ruskin’s Lakeland Home in England Acquired for World Student Centre
Young folk from many countries will benefit by a decision to preserve Brantwood, beautiful lakeland home of John Ruskin, as an international student center.
Tho house, which is a show-place on Coniston Water, Westmorland, has just been acquired by Mr. J. Howard Whitehouse, warden of Bcmbridge School, who is acting as trustee on behalf of an education trust and other interested persons. It is intended to maintain at Brantwood a permanent exhibition of Ruskin’s drawings, books and manuscripts. Tho house will, however, be much more than a museum. It will be used ts a conference centre for sosocieties from all ovor the world. It will also serve as a hostel and facilities will be given for students and others to spend holidays thero at a moderate charge sufficient to cover the expence involved. Thoro are facilities for many outdoor sports and occupations including sailing, swimming and mountain climbing.
Two governing bodie-s aro being set up. One is an advisory council of representative men and women who will consider schemes of activites in connection with Brantwood and cooper ate in carrying them out. The other is a board in whom property will be vested to hold in perpetuity for the purposes described and particularly as a memorial to Ruskin.
The grounds of Brantwood are extensive and stretch to the margin, of the lake. Ruskin was devoted to the house and its surroundings.
