NIGHT WALE
Thinking how trivial distances can seem To those who cheerfully fare forth alone, I set my compass by the firefly’s gleam, Followed the river’s quiet undertone. There were no stars; the night was cool and still; Impatience plucked no longer at my sleeve; Far off I heard the plaintive whip-o’ will; Time was a cloak for spider-folk to weavel There may be destinations which 6vade Foot-farers who must measure every stride; Yefc many another traveller has delayed, Thankful because he loitered once beside Some wooden bridge to hear the river sing And catch the shadow of a white owl s wing.
