Feilding Bowling Club
OFFICIAL OPENING OF SEASON
Thg threatening rain held off to enable the Feilding Bowling Club to open its season on Saturday afternoon in tho presence of a large gathering of bowlers, including representatives from eight visiting clubs. In the course of his remarks in opening the season, the president, Mr. J. S. Tin gey, expressed pleasure in. seeing such a large attendance and gratification at the response to tho invitations sent to district clubs. A great deal of work had been put in ou tho green to maintain its excellent condition and members and visitors would notice that tho surroundings had also received attention to make them pleasing to the eye. He was pleased to see in attendance representatives of tho Oroua Club which was rated very high and he was also happy to note the attendance of Palmerston North bowlers for Feilding rated them very much higher. There was no doubt that the game of mowjs and the comradeship it engendered brought together people of varying opinions irrespective of their station in life .and the influence of suck healthful recreation upon national life and character was undoubtedly very great. It was characteristic of tho Anglo-Saxon to take to sport as naturally as a duck took to water and it was only comparatively of into that other nations had marked this and in appreciating tho value of sport had, in instances, maoc it a compulsory subject. The playing of games was essentially part of our lives. Mr. Tingcy went, on to reter to the scheme on foot to augment the funds of the various sports clubs in the town. The profits would bo utilised towards improving the sports facilities and he appealed for the co-operation of all in furthering this desirable object. Concluding, the speaker said that he had received a telegram from the Hon. J. G. Cobbe regretting nis absence ana wishing the club every success. (Applause.) The Mayor, Mr. C. E. Taylor, thanked the club for its invitation to be present and offered his congratulations to Mr. Tingcy upon fiis rc-clcctiou as president of the club. On the last occasion ho had addressed the Feilding Club bowlers he had made reference to the existing conditions which were far from being bright but he was glad to note evidence of improving conditions and .t'elb that the Dominion was about to experience better times. Ho congratulated tho club upon the excellent condition of the green and was sure members would have au enjoyable season. Ho was pleased to noto the substantial improvements in the provision of a sull-sized croquet green and knew that the club had to thank two of its members for this work. Tho Mayor was pleased to see the Oroua Club represented and the happy spirit of friendly rivalry that existed between the two clubs provided for a very healthy interest in the game. Mr. Taylor also extended greetings to Mr. Purnell, Mayor of Marton, who was rarely found missing on district bowling greens. He concluded by wishing the club a very successful season. Mrs. Tingcy then threw up the first kitty and delivered the first bowl to the applause of the gathering. The visitors then accorded the" Feilding Club three cheers.
A delightful afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. Tingcy and a committee of ladies.
