What Will Happen At Page’s Point?
RIVER BOARD DISCUSSES SITUATION
Present at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board were Alessrs R. Law (acting-chairman), W. S. Carter, B. G. Gower, T. D. Lynch, H. J. Lancaster, W. Jackson and J. Callesen.
The Public Works Department advised of tho decision to station an engineer (Mr Grant) in the Manawatu, in order that he might study the river and report to the Department. —The board decided to give every assistance possible. Mr Lancaster directed attention to the danger at Page’s point and again expressed tho opinion that when the river went through, there would be scouring right up to the Gorge. It was advautageous to the board to save Page’s point. Air Lynch: It is impossible to save it. Ho added that engineers were not unanimous as to where the erosion would take place. borne said below and others above. He was afraid, nevertheless, that when the river did go through, the Makerua banks would be hit very hard. Mr Lancaster urged that Mr Grant be asked to give consideration immediately to the danger at the point in an endeavour to have it saved. Mr Lynch: It would be useless spending money there; the river is going through for sure. Air Law: But it is saving itself. A shingle bank is building up some chains higher up. Air Jackson confirmed this from reports he had received; the river was turning in again to its old course. Mr Law: It will see-saw backwards and forwards as it always has done. It was decided to impose a ten per cent, penalty on unpaid rates from March 25. Tho financial statement revealed a small credit of £4B Os lid. Outstanding rates are as follows: Administrative £36 6s Bd, No. 1 area £94 15s 6d, No. 2 area £B4 3s 2d, No. 3 area £325 5s sd, No. 4 area £225 18s 4d. A sum of £1206 19a 3d is owing on contracts (A. R. Anderson £l3O, R. R. Lind £B2l 39s 3d, Quigan and Rush £255). The need for the cutting of willows impeding the waters of the Oroua river was reported upon and the settlers concerned are to be written to.
