Relief From Tired Feet

One of the simplest, ways, of course, to ensure foot comfort, summer and winter, is to take a good deal of thought when buying yqur shoes (advises Georgina Rivers, in “The Australian Journal’’ for February). Bo sure the heel holds you firmly, or thb slipping will strain the arch of your foot and make you feel now and then as though you were growing a bunion. But don’t buy a heel which nips the back of your ankle, for it may irritate your foot for an indefinite length of time. Don’t buy a very tight shoe because the assistant assures you that a “little stretching will soon fix that, madam!’’ Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn’t. Stretched shoes have a habit of relaxing again, like stretched hats. If you cannot afford to have shoes made to order, get into the habit of buying the same make, and as near as possible the same shape, and your feet'wil have less adapting to do. If, howeyer, the shoe is bought and , pinches, wring a piece of flannel out of hot water, place it on the part that hurts, and it will expand the leather to the shape of your foot. Many people, if their day or (evening involves walking, dancing or standing, give the feet a quick rub over with eau-de-cologne, then dust them with talcum. They find this rests and cools them to a remarkable degree. Methylated spirits rubbed over the feet is also very soothing. Those who suffer, from tired feet day in, day out, find great relief by soaking them at bedtime in warm water and salt, or warm water in which is dissolved enough Condy’s crystals to just colour the water. There are also good remedies on tho market which cost I very little.
