FIRES IN SWAMPS
PRECAUTIONS IN WAIKATO Auckland. Jan. 4. The attention of many resident* of Hamilton was attracted to a large pall of smoke which hung over the Kukuhia swamp on Tuesday evening as the result oL fires which developed in the swamp about a mile west of the Main Trunk railway fine. The smoke was illuminated by a glow from the fires. Settlers and post and telegraph officials report that no immediate damage has been done. A watch, however, is being kept for fear of a breeze fanning the flames and spreading it to grasslands or unharvested hay paddocks. Officials of the Railways Department report that there is no immediate danger to the railway line. Another fire is burning in the Eureka swamp, several miles to the east of Hamilton. The smoke from the peat fires obscured the sun and enveloped the town, causing an oppressive humidity. After a fortnight’s fine and hot weather, rain fell this evening.
