HONOUR FOR SHIP’S CAPTAIN

Cabled advice has been received from London that Captain A. T. Toten has been appointed an Officer of the British Empire (Civil Division) for meritorious sea service. Captain Toten, who was born in London in 1881, retired last May after more than 36 years’ service with Ihe Union l onumn.y. during man; years of «|ii,-k he was in command of the Maunganui, Tahihi and Monowai in the San Francisco mail service. At the outbreak of the war Captain Toten .was in command of ihe motor-ship Limerick engaged on special service tor the British Ministry of Transport till May, 1941, when lie was promoted to the Aorangi. He remained master .of ( |, e Aorangi which served during his command as a troopship in the Atlantic and in Eastern waters till February. 1944 when he transferred to the Mniiiignnui* bringing her to New Zealand before re-* tiring front the company’s service. Hiaj home is in Sydney.
