ORIGIN OF ELECTRICAL SCIENCE

The science of electricity originated from the discovery that amber possesses peculiar properties. Many, are aware that when a piece of am- I ber is briskly rubbed with cloth it is electrified, and will make small! pieces of paper in its vicihity dance j to and fro, and can be made to oth- j erwise display strange traits. As a fact, it is thereby negatively charged. It was the discovery, very long ago, of this characteristic attribute that induced the Greeks to give it a name synonymous with our “elektron.” It is curious to reflect that, had there been no amber, there would probably not now be any electric light, electric trains and so on !
