SYDNEY. 1 he import market continues very inanimate, pending the arrival of the mail. There was some inquiry for kerosene during the day, consequent upon telegrams from Melbourne advising a rise In that market; some purchases -were made at late rates, and holderi. have advanced their prices. Breadstuffs continue very firm, bat the demand has slackened. The sale of a portion of the only car";o of tea now in the market formed the moßt noticeable feature at the auction sales. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Chamber of Commerce was held at the Exchange this day ; Mr. J. L. Montefiore, the chairman, prt - siding. After the transaction of some ordinary business, a long and animated discussion took place upon the subject of Bteam postal service, during which a Btrong feeling was manifested that, in tha event of a fortnightly mail service with the United Kingdom being established, the alternate line should be via Torres Straits ; and the committee adjourned to Friday nest, the 12th instant, for the purpose of pre • paring a memorial to the Government emphatically advocating the importance of this postal arrangement.—Berald, June 11. MELBOURNE. There is little improvement to note in the import market, and sales to-day have not been extensive. Breadstuffs show no appearance of activity ; thew are still buyers in the market willing to operate at £21 10s terms, and £21 net, but there are no sellers to be met with at these rates in the meantime. A Bmall lot of wheat was quitted at 9s 6d, and we learn of a line of 5000 bushels having changed hands for forward delivery at 9s 6d. There is no movement in oats ; the demand has fallen off, and the market is far from strong; for good samples holders must accept of 3s 9d i f they mean selling, but Bom# of the shipments recently to hand are being stored for higher rates. Maize has been largely sold ; about 8000 bushels have been quitted touching 3a 6d, when it improved, and is now firm at 8s 7d to 3s Bd. A parcel of palmatine candles—loCo boxes—has been placed at 10jd. In rice, business in Patna is limited to the sale of small lots for trade purposes. A shipment of Jat-a rice, some 4000 bags, has been sold privately for export, at a price withheld. Wo understand that a satisfactory advance on the price offered by local buyers was realized. A large demand is experienced for dressed Java rice, at prices ranging, according to quality, from £27 to £32. Sales of sugaro are mentioned at £35 to £37 for yellow to grey crystals ; buyers, howeve , purchase with extreme caution, ponding the extensive sale of damaged sugars to come off to-morrow. "We observe a better inquiry for hops; a few trade parcels of Kent 1867's have been disposed of at Is lOd to li lid. In teas, we hoar of about 800 half-chests and 109 chests of good common congous having been taken up at Is od. A shipment of American lamp ware, now landing, was sold at about invoice cost. Sales of kerosine oil are limited; a small pareel of Union brand was eleared off at la 6jd. In liquid the most prominent feature'" in to-day's business waa the auction sale of wines and spirits, when some 200 packages of port and sherries, quarter-casks, bog«- ; heads, and pipes, wore got rid of at from £18 for low to £32 10b for good, and up to £52 10a for medium wines. Privately, we hear of some twenty hogs heads red wine having I een sold at £14. Forty quarter-casks Jules Kobin and Co.'a brandy were ■ sold und°r the hammer at 6s —Argus, June 6. HOB ART TOWN. ' Flour is quoted at the mills from £1G 10s to £17 per I I ton, but there has been very little sold. There ia little wheat at present offering, and in the absence of sales in quantity, it is impossible to give more than a nominal quotation. A small lot was quitted this morning at 63 6d per bushel, and the range given us is from 6s 6d to 7s.—Mercury, May 30. 1 LAT7NCE9TON. ' ! Dairy ' j produce as before,—Times, June 1. 1 | ADELAIDE. The wheat market is still stagnant, the nominal price being 8s a bushel. Dealers are looking out ( with some anxiety for the tidings to be brought by the Panama mail, which it is anticipated will have an effect one way or the other. Flour is about £19 10s to £20 a ton. We cannot report much improvement in business ia the opening out of the import market to-day The trade only purchase for actual and immediate wants. As to anything of a speculative movement in any single article it is a thing unheard of.—Register, June 2. ENGLISH COMMERCIAL. The demand for discount at the Bank is fair. Ii Lombard-street there is not so much enquiry. Money is more plentiful, and the satisfactory appearance of the Bank returns will tend to make brokers work at lower quotations, but the market rate is called at 2 per cent. Short loan-i on Government securities pre done at from Ito 1 i nor cent. The Stock Exchange market presents a favourable appearance. The income-tax has been increased from 4d to 6d., to pay tho costs of the war with Abyasiuia. The Budget was well received. The funds are firmer, and stock is wanted. I'hero is no decided improvement in trade, but it is hoped that late prices of wcol would be maintained at the next sales. Colonial Government securities are firm, and engage a fair amount of attention. New South Wales 5 per cents, better, at 97 to 98 ; Victoria 6 per cents, are quoted at 112 to 113 ; New Zealand 6 per cents, at 106 to 107 i ; Queensland 6 per cents, at 105 to 106. Consols are at 93§ to 93j, for money and account. Colonial securities are in fair demand. The English. Scottish, and Chartered Bank dividend is 16i ; Bank of New South Wales shires are quoted at 44 to 46; Hobson's Bay Railway Co., 50 ; Bank of AustraUsia. 55; London Chartered Bank, 2<l} ; Bank of New Zealand, 8J premium ; Bank of Otago, at a discount; Bank of South Australia, 29 ; Union Bank, 49. The Bail way Loan tender of £400,000 for Tammia at 6 per cent, invitr-d by the Bank of New South Wales, is liktly to be taken up readily. The Australian Mortgage Land and Finance Company has declared 10 per cent, dividend, carrying £10,000 to the reserve. The Board of Trade returns for February shew commerce steady. The Oriental Bank has resigned tho London, agency for New South WhL-e. Gold deposits have been discovered in Psrn equal to those in California. Salted Australian, first heavy, Melbourne, 60 lb., at od to ! first light, same price. First he-ivy, Brisbane, 4fd. Leather. —Australian is lower, best sides 10jd to 105-d ; second 9fd to lOd. Metals. —'I'm an the spot £93 10s to £94. Copper: Fair gales have been made of Burra at from £76 te £77. Iron is unaltered—Scotch pig is quoted at £5 2s 3d. Oils. —Linseed oil is in request and marset una --there are buyers at £34; rape, £35 Ms to £38 ; olive is unaltered; Sydney, dart to fair, £45 5s to £4S ; crude sperm, £9S to £100 : pale seal, £30. Sheepskins are brisk, and terms advancing. The tallow markets are flat, with buyers at I Wheat ia Is dearer than the previous month.
London Wool Retort. Sinco the March series some business lias been doiio in Capo wooU at firm prices ; the market is steady, and, aa manufaoturors are inown to bo scantily supplied, a good competition is ox poet od at the May wool sales, which commenco either on tho 7th or 14th. Arrivals up to date comprise—Sydney, 16,915 bales ; Port Philip, 65,615 bales; "Van Diein en'B Xmnd, 1251 bales; Adelaide, 12,991 bales;. Isew Zoaland, 7634 bales; Swan River, 18bn!cs; Cape, 934 L bales. Total bales, 124,035. A furthor 70,000 to 80,000 bales may be eipe ted, mating the probablo total 200,000 bales. There is no decided improvement in trade, but tho feeling is better, and tho future is viewed with more confidence. Approaching sales will be held simultaneously with European wool fairs, so that large quantities will engage the attention of tho trade. At tho samo time, it is still hoped that the prices of late sales will be maintained. By the arrival of tho branch mail steamar, we {Sydney Herald,) have telegraphic advices from Kngland to Til ay 9. Thn monetary and commercial intclipencc is to tho following effect: — Money easier ; discounts, 2 per cent.; Consols, 93J to 93J, Colonial securities are in fair demand. The wool ships James Lister, La Hogua. and Colonial Empire are reported as having arrived home from Sydney. 3he principal exports to.Sydney during tho month were, bar and rod iron 249 tons, hoop iron 63 tons, galvanised ditto 70 tons ; wiro -17 tons ; linseed oil, 6034 gallons ; rape oil IS3S gallons, olive oil 360 gallons ; woolpacks, £27G3 ; cornsacfcs, £631 ; gunpowder, 301 cwt.; tobacco, 356 lbs.; brandy, 2468 gallons in wood, 3445 gallons in case ; rum, 44,295 gallons; red wine, 9195 gallons; whito ditto, 4050 gallons ; beer in bulk, 3964 barrels ; brer in glass, 637 barrels ; white- salt, 470 tons ; candles, 2P53 cwt. ; currant*. 2750 cwt. J bacon and hams, 165 cwt.; malt, 600 quarters; hops, 164 cwt.
