Captain Couch writes that the schooner Kate McGregor struck on an unknown reef about two miles off the Island of 010, Fiji. She escaped, however, almost uninjured, the only sign of damage being tha loss of a little copper off the forefoot. A warp and kedge were loat.

THE OVALAtT. The schooner Ovalau had eallod at Rarotonga, Atiu, Borabora, Raiatea, and Taha, and was on her way to Auckland, a fall Teasel, when she was wrecked at Hushine. She had on board 41,0001b5. cotton, 67.0001b3. copra, 8601b3. kapok, 1 ton shell, 1000 gallons limejuice and a quantity of trading goods. The hull was »old for 10£ dollara, but hardly had the bargain been concluded when the wreck slipped off the reef and sank in deep water. An inquiry into the circumatancea connected with the wreck was held before Mr. Goodman, Lloyd's agent at Barotonga, and Captain Q. F. Kisdeu and William Bonar. The Ovalau, 116 tons, wai built early in 1879 by Messrs. Sims and Brown, to the order o£ Mr. A. B, Donald. Fiji at that time possessed a profitable field for enterprise, and with a view to placing her on that trade no expense was spared,' so as to make her as comfortable as possible for passengers. She cost £2500, and at the time she was wrecked was valued at £2400. The hall was insured in the New Zealand Office -fer £1400, but that company's net loss will only be £1000, as re-insurances were effected to the extent of £400, viz.— £150 in. the National and £250 in an Australian office. The cargo also was covered to the extent of £1000, by a policy in the New Zealand Office. Of thia amount the Union and National Companies will each'have to bear £250, leaving the net loss of the New Zealand Office £500. In April last the hull was insured for £2000, and the cargo for £1800. In that month the insurance was re-adjusted, a total reduction of £1400 being made on the previous policy, and a year's premium paid. It waj the intention of Messrs. ■ Donald and Edenborough to keep this vessel plying between Auokland and Barotonga only, leaving the work of collecting cargo for hoi: amongst the adjoining groups to smaller vessels. The loss of these gentleman is considerable. The value of the vessel and cargo above insurance will probably be about £3000, Bat there is a far more important consideration in the disorganisation of their business through the loss of the vessel. ■ : '...-' FORT OF ONEHUHGA.
