(by telegraph.) (per press association.) WELLINGTON. Novemoor 11. Operations at the Mapourika are going slowly bufc steadily on. Yesterday the vessel was lifted 16 inches with appliances equal to 2000 ton lifting power, bub further apparatus has been sent for. Ib Is understood that Captain M'Lean has senb in his resignation. The Admiralty has given orders to store 13,000 tons of Westporb steam coal at Sydney. The Pukaki is now on the way with 1600 tons, and the Kini will leave on Monday. A woman named Constance Nicholls was arrested this afternoon on a charge of having thrown vitriol over her husband. The man, who was removed to the hospital, was found to be badly burned, particularly about the neck and shoulders, hut is not considered to be in any danger. The parties had been before the Court on one or two occasions lately, Mrs Nicholls having taken proceedings againsb her husband for maintenance. In- consequence of statements made by the husband, Mr Kenny warned Mrs Nicholls that she must nob interfere at all with the man's work, bufc had better leave him alone. The order sought for was made, and Nicholls promised to comply with lb. He said he would live with her, only that she had " kicked him out." November 12. As a result of the circular sent oub by theSfcewards of theWellingtonßacingClab 17 members express themselves in favor of bookmakers being allowed to ply their calling at the Club's spring meeting and 37 against ib. In consequence of this expression of opinion, the Stewards have rescinded the motion passed at the annual meeting affirming the desirability of licensing bookmakers for next week's races. Constance Nicholls, charged with having thrown a quantity of vitriol at her husband was remanded for a week. Bail was refused. It was stated that the man's injuries were not very severe, and he will probably be well enough to appear In a week.
AUCKLAND. November 11. The sale of drink in tho Auckland Exhibition has been prohibited by tho Licensing Committee, who refused application for a license on tho casting vote of the Chairman. November 12. The city schools have been closed for a fortnight owing to measles.
