WELLINGTON. November 17
When Mrs M'Williams, convicted of attempted murder of Mrs JJick, was brought up, the Judge said he regretted very much that the interest of public safety required a lengthy sentence, which would be for a term of seven years. The prisoner expressed regret for her action. The man Baker, accused of shooting at his wife, and was convicted for a common assault, was sentenced to a year's hard labor
Walter Looney was sentenced to two years' hard labor for theft, and the same term (concurrently) for maiming sheep. Joseph Looney, on the latter charge, received 18 months.
DUNEDIN. November 17. Councillors Swan and Denni3ton are the only nominations for the city mayoralty. James John Marlow, Secretary of the nautical festival recently held here, was fined 40s and costs at the Police Court for running a lottery. The agents of the ship Soukar, which left London for Dunedin on June 28 and put into Mauritius damaged, have been advised that six of her men were washed overboard and lost, and that Captain Wood had both legs broken.
