THE SHOW.

NORTH OTA GO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

President: J. Mitchell, Esq.; vice-presi-dent! : W. Gardiner, Jan., Esq. ; hon. treasurer: W. Milne, Esq. ; general committee: J. S. Holmes, D. Borrie, Thomas Little, A, Murdoch, J. Macpherson, G. Brownlee, JE. Menlove, T. Y. Duncan, W; Cowan, P. Orr, G. Ledingham, 0. B. Taylor, A. Thomson, W. W. Wylie, J. Buckley, J. Johnston, John Donaldson, G. Livingston, D. M'Gregor, J. Henderson, J. Wil'iams, M. Morton, R. Baird, W. Gardiner, Sen. ; secretary : John Church ; auditors : G. R. Hislop and R. C. Skeet. FIRST DAY. The shower of rain which fell about midday yesterday cheeked the Inflow of visitors to the Show which usually sets in between one and two o'clock on the afternoon of the first day. Consequently, when writing in the early afternoon - the attendance was not up to the average, as was made clear by the absence of the usual sea of faces round the ring during the jumping contests. Later on, however, the attendance picked up considerably, the ladies mustering in strong force, and the general result was that the takings at the gate showed an advance of. about Ll4 over those of the previous year. It was, however, noticeable that country ! residents were not in such strong force- as has been seen on the first days of former shows, and it is becoming strongly apparent that they are getting into the habit of reserving themselves for the second day: The judging, which wa3 not commenced until considerably after the appointed time, was very slow in the ring classes —the horses and cattle—the judges expending a good deal of time and consideration upon the discharge of their important work. The result was that it was well after six o'clock before the last of the horses had been judged, and before the end was reached the ground had been pretty well depleted of spectators. The judging generally appeared to give satisfaction, though some of the awards were adversely criticised by some who are recognised as authorities and some who have not yet reached distinction in that direction. Except light falls of rain and one attempt at a hail shower, the weather was pleasant and the full supply of good music provided by the Garrison Band, under Leader M'Leod, made things very enjoyable, the only thing to mar the pleasure being the painful aceident 'recorded in our last issue. The Stewards worked well and were very obliging, and Mr Church, the methodical Secretary, who is always in great; form at the annual shows, had everything in good working order.

Hobses. HACKS, HTJNTBBS, AND PONIES.

Yesterday the exigencies of the press necessitated our breaking off in the middle of our comments upon this section of the show. Resuming at the point where we left off we have to record that the eight hacks ridden by ladies made a good display, all the aDimals being good, and set off by the manner in which tbey were ridden. The first prize went to a fine bay gelding shown by Mr J. O'Brien and ridden by Miss Orr, the second to Mr A. Blair's entry ridden by Miss Auld, and thp third to Mr J. Hedley's X Rays, ridden by Miss Hedley. Miss Auld was awarded the prize for the best horsewoman. Bight fine weight-carrying hacks, 13 stone and upwards, were shown, and of these Mr J. Ross' Mexico, a grand beast equal to any burden on a long journey was placed first, the other places being filled the Land Company's exhibits. There was a splendid ring of fourteen weight-carrying hacks up to 13 stone, and in this fine class Mr J. Hedley's Blackbird, the winner of many first prizes in past two years, was again selected for the highest award. The Land Company provided the second prizetaker, and Mr Harris the third. The Mounted Rifles' horses, of which there was a good ring, were well suited for the purpose. Mr Hedley's Blackbird once more scored, Mr Meek's Laddie being second, and Mr R. Gillies' entry third. For cobs Mr Harris provided the first and third, Captain Teschemaker's Mag separating the pair. Only three ponies over 13 hands were shown. M r Percy Burburv's t-' aki being the chosen one, with Mr J. )?. Miles' Bobby second. Of ponies between 12 and 13 hands there were four, order of merit determined being—Mr J. Hedley's Black Tommy, Mr W. J. Hill's ! Jack, and Miss Olive Cooke's Pet. Four ponies under 12 hands came forward, and Mr T. Harrison's Lord Onslow was placed first, with Miss Edith Gray's Fancy second, and Mr Arthur Milne's Perriwinkle third. LIGHT HARNESS HORSES. There was a good Bhow of light harness horses, and in most of the classes there was a keen competition. The New Zealand and Australian Land Company were the largest exhibitor and secured most of the prizes, and by that means secured tbe Cup for the largest prize-taker in the whole of the light horse sections, including hacks, hunters, ponies, and light harness porses. Taking the light harness horses as a whole they were sound, useful, and good-looking lot. Outside of the Land Company, the most successful exhibitors were Messrs J. Hedley, J. F. Mitchell, G. Livingstone, QJ. Hall, T. C. Harrison, and Dr Douglas. The following iB the prize list for the first day of the show : PRIZE LIST. Hobshs. THOROOGHBRSD, Judges : J. M'Ghie, Dunedin ; Alex. The weather for the people's day was overcast and threatening, and a few drops of rain fell in the morning, but weather experts, pinning their faith to the wind being in a fair quarter, prophesied that the rain would hold, off, and so it did until a late hour. The afternoon was cloudy and chilly, bnt notwithstanding this large crowds flocked to the Show Ground, the country trains bringing in large numbers of visitors, until at 2.30 the attendance was enormoue, and considerably more tban last year. About 3 o'clock a heavy shower fell. There were a number of visitors on the ground frbin afield, some from as far as the Wairarapa and Wellington districts, ail of whom expressed themselves as well pleased with the Show. The Garrison Band again enlivened„the proceedings with some beantiful music. A couple of side shows—a kinematograph and boxing lady—did a lively business, as did also a troup of strolling musicians. Mr M. Doyle had the luncheon booth, and also dispensed liquid refreshments, while Mr Emslie presided at a fruit and confectionery stall. . Horses. DRAUGHTS. Although there is a falling off in the number of draught horses shown, the quality of the exhibits is undeniably of the highest class. Indeed, we have it on the dictum of those who are entitled to speak with authority that in point of the general excellence of the animals shown the present is the finest show of draught stock ever brought into the Oamaru ring. Bearing in mind that" the Oamaru shows have ever been distinguished for, the grandeur of the draught stock gracing the ring, this is a big thing to say; but those who saw the animals exhibited to day will not feel disposed to dispute the statement. There was not an animal shown that was - not fit for any show ring, even the young stock being an uncommonly good lot, giving promise for the maintenance of the high reputation of the district. In the all-aged class for entire horses of four years and upwards, there were three grand animals, all brought out in the pink of condition. Mr Wm, Gardiner's champion of the past two years, Cedric the Saxon, was again proclaimed the winner 5 Mr D. M'KeDzie's Young Renfrew, a remarkably well-built horse, being placed second, in front of Mr J. S. Holmes' Knight Templar, by Crown Prince—Rowena, and consequently fall brother to the winner. Three three-year-old entires were shown in the ring, and were a fine trio. 'J he Crown Prince blood again prevailed, ilr James Gibson's Earl of Springfield, a fine upstanding horse being awarded the red ticket. Mr A. Balfour's young Herd Laddie was placed second and Mr D. Cox's Lord Salisbury 11. third Of the seven entrants in the class for two-years-old six came forward, and gave the judges no light task, the ring being an exceptionally good one. Everyone of the halfdozen had his admirers, and no doubt ordinary judges had put each one first, but experienced judges put the public right, and the knowing ones had no difficulty in placing Mr W. Gardiner's Recerd Reign first as soon as the lot were paraded. This cow famous colt was not shown last year. He is out of the renowned brood mare Helen M'Gregor, until recently well-known as the property of Mr D. M'Gregor, from whom she was purchased by Mr Gardiner. Sired by the champion Cedric the Second, the colt haß breeding good enough for anything, and we believe that he may be claimed to be the best colt of his age in the southern hemisphere. Mr Mitchell's Present Times was first last year as a yearling, and would have occupied a similar position this year had there been no Record He is an exceptionally grand colt, of great quality and substance ; but Record Reign is heavier, and draughts must have weight. Mr Gar? diner's Gienleary, a peculiar grey, was second lass year to Present Times, and the judges evidently had some difficulty in separating them to-day. Gienleary has great quality and beautiful symmetry, and looked exceedingly well in the gear, but his unpopular color took a point off him. The other three were worthy of high commendation, and any one of them might have been easily first in many a New Zealand show. Only four of the six yearling colts entered same forward, and of these Mr Holmes' son of Herd Laddie and Agate 11, a remarkably good colt, was placed first. Mr Menlove, whom we are glad to welcome back as an exhibitor of draught stock, took the second prize with a good colt, Mr Holmes' second exhibit filling the third place. The mares were, as is usual in Oamaru, a great lob, and equally as usual most of the prizetakers came from the Awamoa stud, rendered famous for the magnificence of its long list of grand brood mares. In the first section—brood mares in foal or with foal at foot—Mr Holmes was the only exhibitor with three grand mares— PrinceßS, Flower, and Garnet—which were placed in the order given. There was a grand ring of seven dry mares, which gave the judges a lot of trouble to place, a long time being spent in reaching a decision. Eventually Mr Holmes' trio—Flora, Miss Donaldson, and Cairngorm 111 were chosen for the three awards in the order named, and Messrs Mitchell Bros.' Queen was highly commended, and M. tT. Reld's Maori received a commended ticket. The only breeder represented in the three-year-old filly class was Mr Holmes, whose Sylvia and Nonsuch were awarded the first and second prizes respectively. Three good two-year-old fillies-were shown, and of these Mr Holmes provided the first and second prize takers, Messrs Mitchell Bros, having to rest content with third Of the four yearling fillies, all very promising youngsters, Mr Holmes claimed two, and secured the first award, ; Mr J. ». Anderson's exhibit being second and Mr J. Burgess third. A solitary "jjihree-year-old gelding was shown, Mr Crniekßhank being the exhibitor, but there was a good ring of geldings of 'any agel and the judges marked their sense of-the merit of the horses shown, selecting no less than five for distinction. Of these firaf'wSrsxlainQd by Mr W. Gardiner, Mr Cruiokshank's being highly commended and: Mr 2 Livingstone's commended. For a pair of gelding Mr Gardiner again scored first, Mr Crniekßhank being second and Mr Livingstone third. The first and second prizes for a pair of dry mares were taken>by Messrs Mitchell Bros, being third. Cattle. SHORTHORN. The sole representative of this breed of cattle 1b Mr Gideon Rutherford's bull Gunster, "a grand beast shown in the class for three-year-olds and upwards, and also entered for the medal for the best bull on the ground. polled ANGUS. The show of Polled Angus is as usual confined to the Totara Estate, the Land Company sending forward a line of their farfamed black cattle, which take first awards in all sections. Tottie, by Jamie of Killara,

is awarded the tickefrfor-beatcow, and a fine two-year-old bull, TJie,Khedive, by Baron Arradonl, .aeeares the ticket among the balls. The only competition was as betw^rfth r e;twb' r yeiar]iDg, heifers, wffiph. the judges. in S&paratlhg.' ' ~ Dogs.

The show ofvdogsris not very impressive, half a dozen rough coUies, a couple of smooth ones,' and-two-terriers comprising .the lot. In the former' section a. nice white and tan dog of Mr Shand's secures the red ticket, and a second exhibit by the same owner is seconds Both dogs are full of quality, acd easily score in a not very strong "c'ass, Messrs Little Bros.' Rock, a good quality smooth collie, is first in hisclasß. Mr Peter M'Donald takes a first- award for rough terrier, and Mr George M'Kenzie one for fox terrier. . Extras.," Messrs Waddell and Co, have'a very fine exhibit of tweeds, mackintoshes, hosiery, rugs, hats, and other tailoring and drapery requisites sristical'y arranged ,in the grain; shed, and these attracted no amount of attention, especially the department devoted t-o ladies, tailoring. Messrs Shand and Co., of the North Otago ; B' ewery, are awarded a first certificate of merit for an exhibition of ale and stout brewed and bottled at the local brewery, which is exceptionally nicely got up.
