BUTTER SUPPLY QUESTION.

EXPORT PROHIBITED. Pek Press Association. "Wellington May 7. Mr Massey informed a Post reporter that he had just received a report from the Pood Commission on the price of butter. The Commission recommended that, while the present- stocks with the ! quantity likely to be produced in the nest, two months will be for our requirements, be a shortage if further cxpoitatior.s to any extent arc allowed. The Commission were of opinion that further exportation!, to I Australia, should for the present be proI hibited, except with the consent of the Government, and that such consent should be withheld unless the Governi.ment were satisfied that sufficient butter for the normal requirements of the Dominion is retained in the country. '< Mr Massey added that, in accordance I with the recommendation, of the Commission, the Government- will retain control of the export of butter for the i winter months;, and will endeavor to see * that ■ sufficient is retained in New Zealand for our own requirements, and i that a reasonable price is?charged as ■ compared . with the price charged hi other countries. ; He also stated that information had reached him that a shipment of some 6000 or 7000 box.es of butter was being returned from England to New Zealand, the consignees evidently realising that-at the ruling price it would pay them, better to send it back than unload it in England. The real trouble was the . scarcity in Australia and the high piice obtainable there. Besides that, many New Zealand factories .which formerly made butter were now making cheese because itpaid them bettor to do so. The Imperial Government were asking for far more cheese for the use of the troops than New Zealand could supply.
