UNDER-WEIGHT BREAD
DELIVERY TO AERODROME
For selling under-weight bread to an aerodrome, L. A. Woodward, Ltd., who pleaded guilty, were fined £6 by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., at Christchurch. Out of 87 loaves, 71 were short weight when delivered at the aerodrome, said Mr E. F. Smith, inspector of weights and measures. The total short weight was 101 b 4Joz, giving an average of just over 2oz in each loaf. The bread had not been weighed when it was taken out of the oven. The case was more serious in that the. bread was purchased on a ration basis for the men on the station.
Dr Haslam, who appeared for the company, said the bread was wheat germ for the Air Force, and the man in charge of the oven had allowed the temperature to get too high, with the result that the bread lost weight. The shortage was made up as soon as it was found.
