Prince Alfred’s Stay in New Zealand. — The West Coast Times of December 28th, states :— “The Goldfields Secretary received a telegram from Wellington yesterday, from the Hon. Major Richardson, stating that H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh would arrive in Wellington on the 8th March, and it was his intention to remain in New Zealand for two months. Nothing, however, was known respecting what places in the Colony the Duke would visit.”

Hokitika Races. — These races commenced on Monday, December 30th, and were largely attended. In the Selling Race of 50 sovs., open to all horses — One mile and a half — (The winner to be sold by auction immediately after the race.) — Mr Day’s Native was first. Entering the straight run, Native passed the field, and landed a winner by about half a length. In the Hurdle Race of 70 sovs. Native was distanced. For the second day (January 1st) there were about 6000 persons on the course. The races were five in number ; in the last of which — the Hurdle Handicp, of 100 sovs, three miles — Native was again first. In this steeplechase the whole of the horses took their jumps splendidly, not a single mistake being made, although, from the constant rain, the course was very slippery. A third day’s racing was arranged for Jan. 5th.
