CRICKET MATCH

A match between two elevens of the Wanganui Cricket Club married and single —was played on Saturday last, on the club’s ground and resulted in the victory of the single eleven, with ten wickets to fall.

The weather was all that could have been desii’ed —clear and warm, yel tempered with a fresh breeze, so that a considerable number of spectators assembled to watch the game Tlie elevens mustered by one o’clock when the wickets were pitched. The married went in first, Messrs Flood and Ferry appearing at the wickets to the bowling of Messrs Witchell and Jenkins. A maiden over to Flood, and then a run from the other wicket followed. A ball from Jenkins went off the top of Flood’s bat and was caught by Tomlinson, backstop, very cleverly. The game thus opened, continued without much display of batting through the innings of the married eleven, small°scores being made throughout,—the highest being five. In an hour they were alf out for twenty-eight. In noticing this iuinngs, while little can be said in praise of the “in” side, much is deserved by the single eleven, who appeared fully determined to assert their superiority at cricket. The fielding, although there was not much to speak of, was admirable in so far as it went, especially the back-stopping of Tomlinson to the sivift bowling, which excited the admiration of all. The bowling of Mr Witchell, captain of the eleven, was excellent, as an analysis, if taken, would have proved ; and his batting, when the other side went to the wickets, topped the total of runs made in the first innings by the whole of the married eleven. Mr Jenkins, another powerful batter, was untimely caught out for 7 by long leg when sending a drive in that direction. The total score for the single eleven was 81. Jn the second innings the married did better ; but still not well ; only saving defeat in one innings by three to spare, which were soon made by the single ; and so the match terminated after four hours. MARRIED.
