Land Sale. — One of the most important sales of land that has taken place in this district comes off to-day at Holly Lodge, the property of Mr W. Finnimore, who has made arrangements for conveying intending purchasers comfortably to the place and back again. (See advertisement). Funeral of Mr William Garner. — A very large and respectable number of friends accompanied the remains of this gentleman to the cemetery yesterday evening. The deepest sympathy is felt and expressed for the sorrowing relatives of the deceased, in which we humbly participate.
Phrenology. — Our readers who take an interest in this subject will remember that Professor Cook’s lecture comes off to-night at the hall of the Empire Hotel. Dinner to Mr Fox. — A number of friends and supporters of Mr Fox entertained that gentleman to a dinner in the Freemasons’ Hall last night. Thos Powell, Esq., presided. The dinner was private, in the sense of no representative of the press being present. Literary Institute. — The second (an adjourned) meeting of this Society was held on Tuesday evening, the President, Rev. J. Elmslie, in the chair. There was no regular business before the meeting. The only inducements presenting themselves were the discussion of the advisability of establishing a reading-room and library, and the payment of the first half-years’ subscription. The attendance under the circumstances was limited, but the few present went through the business in hand ; the results of which will, no doubt, appear in due time when the several sub-committees will have reported on their different subjects, such as the prospects of a reading room being established, or the likelihood of getting a good library commenced, and the opening of a course of lectures. On this latter head an announcement in another column, advertises the opening lecture by the President, which, it is expected will be followed by one from Mr Fox.
First Impressions. — A correspondent, writing of the late earthquakes, under date the 1st inst., says :— Was there an earthquake at ten minutes to eight ? or was it the wind or what, that shook my house as if three or four lions were gambolling and as many young elephants playing at leapfrog up stairs or was it a great strong giant that took the building by the corners and shook shook it powerfully and nervously to test its stability ; if so his verdict must have been shaky (it moves a little to the lightest foot). But this morning everything was trembling, the curtains quivered, the glass and window frames rattled, my seat lurched and pitched enough to make one sick. I have read of castaway sailors coming ashore as they thought, on a huge sleeping whale and living for a while in peace and not till the thirsty crew began to dig wells did the monster begin to surge and plunge and finally disappear in the deep. The sailors, at the first moving of their supposed land must have felt as I felt this morning. When you experience a shaking like this for the first time it produces an indefinite sensation that catches and pervades the whole nervous system, stretches seconds into half hours, and fills you with a curious sense of you knew not what. Such was my first shake, but I suppose some of our old settlers would think it strange not to be shaken a little occasionally.
