Angler, Blue Gown, Tartar, Venture, Banshee, and Monk also started. The field got away to a rather bad start, and coming round past the stand Merlin led by a length, the rest in a ruck. When the 1-i- mile post was reached Merlin was still leading, with Grand Duchess, Slander filly, and Venture gradually closing up, the rest of the field several lengths in the rear. Coming into the straight the first three horses came away, which resulted in a grand finish, j the Slander filly winning by a neck, and Merlin beating Grand Duchess by half-a--length for second place. forced handicap, 25 soys. ; once round the course. Mr R. Wheeler's Merlin, 9st 41b . . 1 Mr R. Walters's Slander filly, Bst . . 2 Mr P. Murtagh's Angler, Bst . . 3
Bad start. Merlin, Angler, and Taipo had all the best of it, and ran in the order named until the back of the course, when Slander filly went up and passed Angler and Taipo, but could not get on level terms with Merlin, who won by two lengths.
The stewards held a meeting at the conclusion of the races, and consideied the protest against Gang Awa in the Hack Hurdle Eace, which they dismissed. The protest against Merlin receiving second money in the WaverleyWaitotara Handicap on account of being short weight was adjourned until Saturday.
