CHRISTCHURCH RACES.

(PER UNITED PRE3S ASSOCIATION.) CintisTcinmcH, Nov. 8.

There was not a very large attendance at the races to-day, the threatening weather having something to do with this. A smart thundershower fell for about an hour between 2 and 3 o'clock. The new arrangements are much appreciated, being, more ample in every way. The influence of the Gaming Act was felt in the absence of lottery tables, i &c, but sweeps went on just the same as ever. The racing was not first class. The following are the details of events : — FREE HANDICAP. Billingsgate (E. Derritt) . . 1 Chancellor (H. Thompson) 2 Talent (W. Clifford) . . .[ [ [ 3 Time— lmin. 46£secs. Betting— 3 to 1 against Billingsgate, 4 to 1 agaf.nst Chancellor, 5 to 2 again3t Sir George, 5 and 6 to 1 against any other. The fine field of eleven faced the starter, who, after one break away, got the lot off nicely together, but Laertes and

Chancellor had ratker the best of it; Talent, however, quickly taking second place, and On Dit third. Farewell and Duessa were long last. Eandwick then went up third place, and at the same time Chancellor, who had seemed all there, fell away; but, at the turn for home, Talent led, followed by Chancellor and Rawdon, Billingsgate coming up fast. In a few seconds more Billingsgate was the one shout, and Isaac Walton Slander horse came in a winner by about half a length ; a little over a length separated Chancellor and Talent, Joker making a fair fourth. Totalisator , 164 subscribers j 40 on the ■winner, taking £3 15s each. DEEBY. The Dauphin, by Traducer — Marie Theresa (R. Ray) 1 Peeress colt (R. Derrett) . . . . 2 Nonpariel (G. Hope) . . . . . . 3 Time, 2min 44secs. Betting — 2 to 1 against the Dauphin and Matakau ; 6 to 4 against the Peeress colt. There were a couple of breaks away, in which Diosrna was a conspicuous performer, and the half-dozen then made a pretty start immediately in front of the stand. Nonpariel and Matakau were first away, and after running a short distance the latter went to the front and led round the turn ; Nonpariel, second ; The Dauphin, third ; and the Peeress colt, fourth. Diosma and Hiuemoa were well to the rear. Opposite Cutts's place The Dauphin went up second, lying at Matakau's girth : Nonpariel third, and the Peeress colt fourth. The horses ran in this order till past Ford's, but shortly afterwards Ray got on even termsjwith Matakau, and the two placed further distance between them and the rest of the field. Rounding the turn he Dauphin came on, gradually increasing the lead till fairly within the rails, and at the same time Matakau displayed a backward tendency. The Peeress colt at this stage came up with a tremendous rnsh, leading to the opinion that with longer distance Derritt might have landed a winner. Ray, however, riding splendidly, had the race well in hand, and scored a fine win for the Middle Park colt by perhaps a length ahead of Peeress colt; Nonpariel third, and Hinemoa fourth. Ray was loudly cheered on weighing. In the totalisator there were 253 subscribers, 46 being on the winner, taking £4 19s each. C.J.C. HANDICAP. Grip (Derritt) 1 Louis dOr (C. Hurgess) . . . . 2 Lady Emma (Clifford) .. ..3 Time — 3min 45sec. Betting — 2 to 1 against Grip, 3 to 1 against Volunteer, 4 to 1 against Lady Emma. Hilda declared to be 61b3 overweight. The race was started just as a heavy shower was clearing off, the weather being bitterly cold. The Governor and Grip were first away, Libeller being third. Grip led round the turn, closely attended by Louis dOr on the inside, with Libeller also well up. Grip continued to lead down on the straight, with Libeller third, followed by Louis dOr and Hilda. In this order the horses ran opposite the stand, and past Cutts's. The Governor was f ailing , off opposite Ford's, when Louis dOr went up and got on level terms with Grip ; Hilda went up to third place, Libeller falling back, and at the same time Volunteer began to go up. At the turn, the whole came with a rush, Grip leading, and Lady Emma being well up. All were now hard at it with the exception of Derritt, who appeared to feel confident. Tke finish was a close and exciting one, Mr Robiuson's horse having a length the best of it. Lady Emma made a fairly good third. Totalisator, 838 subscribers at £2 ; 107 on the winner, taking £5 13s each. "WELCOME BTAKES. Siesta (Webster) 1 Vanguard (Derritt) . . . . . . 2 Amazon (Harris) . . . . . . 3 Time — 40sec. This was a capital race, and the victory. Popular Siesta, got all the best of a bad start, and, closely attended by Trinket, cut out the work at a smart pace. Mr Butler's filly, however, soon gave way to Welcome Jack, Vanguard, and Amazon. Welcome Jack was done with at the distance, and Vanguard and Amazon could never get on terms with Siesta, who won easily by two lengths, the victory of W. Horsford's colours being received with loud cheers.
