The agents of the Emmerdale state that they were told distinctly that, as the vessel was outside the Vend, there was no use trying to get a cargo, and the Union Company, when asked to accept a charter, said they had plenty of bottoms of their own. The agents further state they can get coal at any time from the Vend, provided they ship it through the Union Company, or they can get it from some companies outside the combine, but it go happens in the present instance that the other coal will not suit the firm who gave the charter. Arrangements have now been made to ship certain quantities through the Union Company. Mr. D. Mills denies all knowledge of the reported participation of the Union Company in the coal combine. He says that all the company's so-called business is contracted between the Sydney and New Zealand offices. The coal importers here state that owing to the abnormal demand for coal at Newcastle inter-State shipping firms are being seriously inconvenienced as the result of delays in obtaining loading, and considerable financial loss is involved.
