FOOTBALL.

INTERPROVINCIAL SOCCER

CANTERBURY DEFEATS OTAGO

(Per Press Association.)

CHRISTCHUROH, Sept. 22

The third interprovincial Association football match between Otago and Canterbury was played at Lancaster Park to-day* in fine weather. There was a fair attendance of spectators. The teams had played two matches in former years and the 'honours were even, but to-day Otago were much the lighter team, arid were in no department -;o clever as Canterbury, who Avon rather easily by seven goals to one.

OTAGO DEFEATS WELLINGTON

DUNEDIN, Sept. 21. The interprovincial football match— Otago v. Wellington—was played on the Caledonian ground to-day in the presence of about 8000 spectators. The weather was fine but cold, and the ground was in splendid order. Th© game—which was fast and evenly contested—resulted in a win for the home team by nine points (three tries) to six points (two tries). For the winners tries were scored by Macpherson (2) and Paton, while Evanson scored both for Wellington. TWe forwards on both sides played well, and gave some fine exhibitions of clever foot-work. The backs also played well, except that the passing was erratic at times.

The Pirates senior team defeated the Old Timers on Saturday afternoon by 21 points t%lO. The reunion of the Pirate Football Club was held the Fire Brigade Hall on Saturday evening, when there was a big muster of members and visitors. The Mayor (Mr. C. E. Mackay) attended and presented the trophies won during the season. Mr. G. Spriggens (President of the Club) occupied the chair, and a large list of toasts were gone through. The vocal and instrumental programme was greatly appreciated. A most successful gathering terminated at about 11.15 with " Aul Long Syne." We understand there is a possibility of H. A. Kiernan, the Auckland skipper, coming down to play for the Kaierau " .Old-Timers" next Saturday. The annual reunion of the Club will be held on the same night.
