ATKINSON'S CHALLENGE CUP
i The match to decide the holder of the above cup for the season 1907 took place on Saturday afternoon on the Racecourse at 5.15 p.m., when Pairawa (Thursday) and St. Paul's (Saturday) met. There was a large attendance, and the spectators witnessed a very fast and exciting game. W. Thomson, on account of illness, was an absentee from the St. Paul's team, and his place was ably filled by J. Butler, who had not played in any previous matches for the above cup. The teams lined up as follows: — Pairawa (red and Black). —Williams, iC. Go'ldsbury, Bepefield, G. Haase, and Goss. ! St. Paul's (Navy Blue).— Naylor. D. i Miller, Butler, Bell, and W. Miller. As usual, Miller lost the toss, and Pairawa played with wind and sun in their favour. J>. Miller won first bully, but Piairawa attacked strongly. .Williams got in circle, but was stopped by i "VV. Miller. Bell relieved with a good , drive into touch, but Haase returned ball to St. Paul's circle, where a shot iby Williams was well stopped by W. Miller. The game now underwent a I sudden change. Butler passed to D. ! Miller, who made a strong win up the field, and shot the ball out to Naylor. Tho latter was tackled by Haase, and returned the ball to D. Miller, who dashed into the circle only to find Qoss !in the way. Being unable to shoot he I passed to Naylor, who sent the ball between the posts—St. Paul's 1, Pai- , rawa 0. The Red forwards broke away, but some clever work by Bell stopped their progress. The Blues forwards got possession, and removed play to halfway. Here D. Miller dashed off, and beating the opposition scored a good goal—St. Paul's 2, Pairawa 0. Goldsbury and Benefield led an attack and looked like scoring, but Bell and W. Miller's defence was eery sound. Halftime was now called. The second spell was very even, and resulted in D. Miller scoring another goal for St. Paul's, and in Williams shooting a r>retty one for Pairawa, the game ending—St. Paul's 3, Pairawa 1.
St. Paul's therefore retain the cup for the second year. For the losers G. Haase played a sterling game in the backs, Williams being most prominent in the forwards. The winners' backs made no mistakes, their defence being very strong. The forwards displayed more dash and combination than their opponents. Mr. Wakely refereed.
